AN UNSAFE SPACE FOR BLACK PEOPLE. Deeply saddened by my visit to the Urchin. I went to order a good lunch and snuggle down for a rare afternoon off. The only other people in there apart from the distracted staff was a middle aged white couple who were sitting inches away from me when I ordered. I ordered a £18 lunch, the manager asked me where I was going to sit - I indicated a table. The middle aged couple immediately left their seat (not eating) and half -ran to the table I said I was going to sit at - clearly to prevent me sitting at it. And sat their giggling like 12 -year-old mean girls - it was a hostile and aggressive move and clearly very upsetting. I told the manager twice I was upset and he muttered something about it being odd and told me to sit in another room! He clearly did not care about my feelings or comfort levels. I said to cancel my lunch order as it left a very bad feeling but was still obliged to pay £5 for a very very weak shandy lager - which I couldn't finish as I felt so unwelcome and degraded.

Awesome shellfish and craft beer. Really impressive brewed beer on site with great flavour and good at a low ABV.

There are times when you cannot say that you didn't know what you were letting yourself in for. The Urchin nails its colours to the mast, announcing seafood and craft beer. And on that score, it does not disappoint. It appears to do both well, albeit at a price, but that's not really surprising either. That aside, it's a bit characterless, going for minimalist décour instead of the finely tuned Victoriana / Hipster humour junkshop look of other similarly upscale hostelries. Worth a pop in for a shellfish blow out, a beard-rubbing craft beer sampling session or both.

Huge disappointment. Prawns gritty. Lentils not washed, so consequently gritty also. Really gone downhill. Staff lovely though.

A hidden gem in Hove. The prawn & ginger wontons were 10/10 ! As was the crab & oysters. The very impressive craft beer selection was a bonus. The friendly staff did a great job of making it a memorable lunch.

Used to love the Urchin but the good isn't so good now. Spices in practically everything! Even the chips are covered with black pepper !

A very disappointing meal. The dishes sounded great but seriously lacked flavour. The Squid Karage was no different from salt & pepper squid, apart from the price. The chorizo, prawn & squid feijoada should have been packed with flavour, but it was 4 large prawns (shell on in a steaming sauce), some very rubbery squid heads & a few slices of chorizo, swimming in a bland tomato sauce with big lumps of barely cooked tomato floating in it. Maybe it was an off night for the chef, but I won't be speeding back there.

Cannot fault this place. More beers then you can ever drink, seafood dishes that are truly unique (think 64 Degrees) and a friendly atmosphere. Think they make their own gin too!

Food is absolutely amazing but one of the bar staff was a bit rude, put a bit of a downer on the meal. Would still come back without a doubt.

Amazing, delicious seafood. A very limited 'stable menu' on your table... But it's all about the blackboard and its specials. Devine, creative cooking with fresh ingredients. As good as The Salt Room but at a price making it not just a special treat. Will definitely go again. I almost forgot the beer! A nice selection on draught and lots of crazy bottled beers and ciders are also available.
