To be honest the 4 stars goes to Gavin, the assistant who helped me for over an hour, just before closing time as well, so patiently. He was extremely helpful, polite and efficient. And at the end I came home with the best pair of hiking boots and can't wait to wear them. The women's section downstairs was a bit of a mess and needed a bit if tlc... In general it is not the most exciting outdoor shop I've been, these managers should check out outdoor shops in Germany and Austria for inspiration!

I didn't catch his name, it was either Gavin or Darren. Not the first shop Ive been into looking for hiking shoes. He was brilliant. Asked my when and what type of walking I need them for. Measured my feet etc. So knowledgeable. I won't name and shame the other shops but he was hands down the best for advise. I didn't purchase shoes/boots as I didn't have time to try other boots on but I'll be returning this week. They also price match which he shared with me! Excellent news for me

Good Blacks store with very helpful staff. They will put items aside for you if you call and give advice on arrival even if the item saved for you is not right and they have to restock it. Good range in a large store and have good offers on. They will match their own website prices and offers (Millets and Blacks) if you show them on a mobile. Amazing that other store refuse to match themselves these days. The camping range is surprising given it is in the basement and quite small. They stock a lot off the shop floor so always ask if you cant see it.

Love this shop since i remember. My addiction to mountains and snowboarding always get me there to buy some winter/snow clothes. Prices would be cheaper and i would come more often definitely. Anyway i dont really expect that from companies they provide but it would be nice.

Great service, staff were friendly. The only down side is the check out on the basement was closed. What's the point of having the till downstairs when they are closed? It was a bit pricey, but I got what I needed.

Found a great pair of North Face gloves on sale, size medium. Found a large in the exact same glove. When I checked out they refused to give me the sale price since the large didn't have the sale tag. Then they took the sale tag off the medium. I've never had a store manager act in that manner anywhere. Won't be going back again.

I find that the staff are very understanding to deal with the the specialist issues to provide the waterproof jackets of North Face for 6 substitutes of St John's Deaf FC.
It has always been my pleasure to visit Blacks shop at Chancery Lane for the last few years where I purchased numerous outdoor items.

Blacks is great for getting a good deal. Price wise they are amazing. The people that work there are not very helpful at all. You should really go in there with the attitude that you are online shopping and you should know what you want and why. As an example, I’m a tall person and asked is the hiking backpack was laying well on me. The guy said yeah it’s perfect - only on my hike did I notice the straps are S/M in size... will see if I can exchange but the pack is worn from its maiden trip...

Visited this store on the weekend. Whilst it took a while for a sales assistant to ask whether I needed help, when he did it was great! Really friendly, helpful, and knowledgable young man. Gave me a lot of information about the walking boot, options to get a better fit, and brought me lots of different sizes to try on. Whilst he was young and maybe less experienced with hiking and backpacking, he tried his best and it was very appreciated as a first-time backpacker myself. Good stock range but the other staff were a bit grumpy and a lot less forthcoming.

Collecting an order is a CHORE for staff at this (Chancery Lane, London) branch.
I provided Online Order Number and UK Valid Photographic/Residential address Driver's Licence card and they REFUSED to give me the order as I didn't have the original order receipt print-out or a mobile phone showing the 'delivery receipt'.
You'll be expected to provide a DNA swab in the future, no doubt, before you collect your order.
No logic at all - even though the branch holds order-sheet print outs in their 'expandable file envelope' that proved my email address and even the last four digits of credit card used to buy the product online (which I even showed...).
BLACKS Chancery Lane; chill out and use a brain cell.
Will not be recommending BLACKS to colleagues or friends.

It took two weeks for a click and collect order to arrive with no explanation from the store. No answer on the phone or social media when trying to find out where my items were and I was offered 10% off my next purchase when someone finally responded to me by email. Really bad customer service and after this experience, I would definitely not recommend or buy from here again.

My partner Judy Anderson bought two camping chairs from this branch a few weeks ago. She chatted about the chairs to one of the staff as none were displayed but they were on the website. The staff member found two of them in the stock area and she bought them using cash. A day later when I sat in one it collapsed and although I wasn't injured I easily could have been. As she was in a hurry when she bought the chairs we couldn't find the receipt but a) as the chairs were Black's own brand and b) as she had a relatively long chat in order for the chairs to be found I assumed that the dangerously faulty chair would be replaced or at least we would be offered a refund. Neither of these things happened. My conversation with Alex, the manager started politely but she adamantly refused to replace the chairs or refund the money unless I had the receipt. I grew exasperated and explained that the chair could have injured me and that I wouldn't have bought the chair back for no reason. I got nowhere, got angry and left the store after being threatened with the police. I understand that "proof of purchase" is required for refunds and if this had been an expensive item we would have kept the receipt. The manager's inflexibility and refusal to accept that. my complaint was valid leads me to give you this advice -don't buy stuff from Black's, if you do, keep the receipt though I do feel obliged to add this rider - this chair could have eviscerated me and I believe I would have had a strong legal case if I had been injured. I've worked in retail and a flexible, moral manager would have apologised,replaced the item and thanked their preferred deity that a customer had not been seriously injured by one of the products they sold.

I'd like to rate it zero stars. Unhelpful, rude and downright passive aggressive staff. The manager in particular was uninterested in helping me when a product failed after 3 weeks. In fact she seemed to delight in her unhelpful attitude. I'll never shop there again.
