Wonderful experience. I walked in not knowing a thing about walking sticks but came away with a beautiful one that really helped relive my walking pain. I'm partial to beautiful wood and I can't tell you how proud and happy I am with my stick. I'll definitely buy from here again. The customer service is second to none, knowledgeable and really felt valued. Thank you very much

After snapping the top spring on my (heavily used) Brigg solid-stick umbrella on a drizzly Saturday, I tried my luck in James Smith & Sons that same day. After a warm greeting and a comment about my terrible luck, the extremely knowledgeable staff quickly identified the problem and noted that the spring was a different size to those used by Smith. The umbrella was taken downstairs to their on-site workshop where a bespoke top spring was fashioned and fitted. Astonishingly, this took no more than 15 minutes. After paying a very small amount for such a high standard of work I left with my beloved umbrella repaired and ready to keep me dry for the rest of the day. An amazing experience from an authentic London institution.

Excellent Shop, great selection of Umbrellas and Walking sticks, a perfect shop for that special gift. The service here really cannot be bettered upon, diligent, helpful, and extremely polite. Little wonder it survived 190 years!

Superb products & excellent customer care. The Team helped me, at very short notice, to replace a bespoke umbrella to the same specifications and at a reasonable cost. Despite the lockdown my umbrella was reproduced on-time and with only a small uplift from the original cost. Customer engagement in person, and over email, was first class. Huge thanks to Daniel & Joshua!

Beautiful shop and wonderful umbrellas, but am disappointed with customer service. Ordered something for a birthday and paid extra for a courier to make sure it arrived on time. Then today I was told it would arrive the following day, after the birthday. I asked if I could send a courier myself and the person just stalled and made excuses until I finally gave up. If only the quality of the service matched the quality of the merchandise. ????????????

Thanks to Google maps, found this historic location where the salespeople are very friendly and accommodating. Tried a few umbrellas and was looking for one as small as they make as a gift. I wasn't disappointed and the staff were very helpful. The wood crafted items are quite nice as well and there is significant choice of design.

Bought an 150 GBP umbrella that broke 3 month after; sent them for a repair, and still waiting to get it back. That was two years ago.

Beautiful, old world store dating back to 1830 with a stunning range of walking sticks and canes. Many were handcrafted using unusual pieces of wood providing unique handles. Great gift idea for someone worth £250+ Also a good selection of premium umbrellas for men and women. Sales people were approachable and really knew the products.

Wonderful shop with outstanding service. Bought two umbrellas as gifts for family members. Unlikely to ever need another one due to quality and craftsmanship. Lots of choice with nothing too much trouble. Also worth a browse if your nearby. Highly recommended.

London's oldest umbrella store, in operation since the 1830. This establishment also specialises in elaborate walking sticks, canes and even fancy sceptres. The store retains its vintage look and and dusty charm. Expectably, prices are steep but it's well worth a visit even if you are not interested in making a purchase. NOTE: staff are not particularly welcoming with photographers!!! ???? Pictures by Ignacio de Asua ????INSTAGRAM: @unhippieconosde ???? TRIPADVISOR PHOTOWALKS : “Buenos Aires Photographer”

This store is a national treasure. Not only it is like stepping back into a timelessly Victorian store, but they make fantastic umbrellas as well, and will happily repair their own umbrellas. I've had mine for more than 15 years and had it repaired once. They make great gifts as well.

The store itself is beautiful. They specialize in walking sticks and stick umbrellas which they make. But they also sell other umbrellas from other brands. The umbrellas that they make are quite pricey but the quality is amazing and worth the investment.

This really is just an completely outdated curiosity shop. They sell really overpriced umbrellas and walking sticks and cane's. Granted that this shop does do a lot of hand-made products. And it does have a vast range and excellent supply of umbrellas - in every conceivable shape, size and colour - imaginable. What is most surprising is the fact that this novelty-curiosity shop has managed to survive for so long, and on a prime bit of major real estate, and in the Central part of London's West End? Surely, their direct competition is now from all of the prolific Online Shoppers - eager to look for a bargain. As per usual in these types of novelty shops the staff are reasonably friendly and polite. But so were the staff on the Titanic and that also sank without a trace....

This place is amazing! You HAVE to go there if you have the possibility. You will find walking sticks and umbrellas for everybody. It is not cheap but the quality is the best. I did not know an umbrella could be made with such quality.

I came in to look for a new (additional) cane. The selection was quite varied, and the people in the shop were professional. That is, they asked questions to determine my needs and desires, presented several options, and then cut my selection to fit. They were all friendly and even showed interest in the custom cane I came in with. If only all shops could have a staff this good, business would be improved in many ways. And by this, I mean that, as an American, more of our shops should train their staffs to be more like the wonderful folks at James Smith & Sons. This experience was one of the highlights of our trip to London.

Popped in today to have a small piece replaced on my JS & S umbrella (which itself has given over a decade of excellent service); the staff were friendly and helpful, ensured the work was done within about three hours, and upon collection insisted it was a complimentary repair with no money owed. That's what I call good service! If you need a first-rate umbrella with customer care to match, look no further.

We happened upon the shop near the end of our visit to London in July 2018. Regretted not buying an umbrella then, so when we returned in October 2019, we made it a priority to stop in and pick one up. As getting it home (Colorado) would have been a challenge, we asked them to ship it, but hold off for a few days so that it would arrive after we were home. It was delivered the day we arrived at home. Marvelous place, excellent service! My wife is already looking forward to our next visit in a couple years to look for a stick.

Greatest selection of canes that you might want . I bought one that I call the eye,it has what looks to me like an eye on the grip. They cut the cane to the correct length and did a fine job. If you wanted a great cane, do come here.

Wonderful experience! Outstanding service! Came in to get a cane for my 96-year old dad. They provided great advice, very elegant. Turns out the length was perfect. Definitely highly specialized and knowledgeable staff. Thank you very much.

Such an awesome store with a rich history. Staff was incredibly friendly and took the extra time to fill out tax papers for customs. Gift wrapped the umbrella I purchased and filled me in on the care of it. Definitely one of the nicer shopping experiences I had while in London.

I loved it. The best umbrella (plus a whole lot more) store I have ever been in. They carry high quality stock umbrellas, canes, walking sticks, folding chairs, and other unusual items as well as offering a silver and gold mounting service for object of this type as well as any type of bespoke thing you can dream up in their product line meaning it is a store for all budgets. The prices are also exceptionally reasonable for what you get as well. And the service - it's exceptional in all respects. People forget what shopping at stores used to be like - lots of store personnel to assist you and answer any questions you may have. Nowadays it's all self service, so a store like this really stands out when you can find one. And it's just exceptionally notable that they have been in business since the 18th century and mostly at the current location. They are doing something right to still be in business with such a broad spectrum of customers. Highly recommended, even if it's just to stop by to see a Victorian style store that is 100% customer oriented selling high quality and bespoke merchandise. You won't regret it.

This is the most racist shop I have ever been in my 6 days in London. The sales person gave a an extremely reluctant smile when I came in and a very warm greeting to the American couple who walked in after me. He told them to browse freely and open any umbrellas they fancied. I was browsing and walking about the store. No eye contact was made, they looked away while I was at the counter. Clearly, a shop where only middle aged white men are interested in serving only middle aged white people.
