Really love this pub! 2 for 1 on specials on a Monday is a great deal for delicious food - don't get there too late though as it often sells out of the best dishes. If you get there too early though the stews aren't ready - get there at 7/8pm sweet spot for a yummy dinner. My only criticism is that they don't have custard with their puddings. Who doesn't have custard with a crumble?!

Great pub and food.
Why does the lights in the beer garden need to be so bright after 9pm. It's like being in a sports stadium?
There is no ambience at all in beer garden.

Be careful when connecting to the free wifi, someone in pub (patron) or near by is spoofing / snooping on the pubs WiFi. They tried to access my email but as I have extra security I was informed by googoe and I changed my password.

Absolutely delicious food and good service. We were very disappointed however to discover that they had run out of half the menu due to unexpected fire works crowds. I guess we'll just have to come back to have the beer battered Halloumi!

I visited the George Payne on Thursday 28th June with my daughter & friends. I ordered the pizza from the kids menu for my daughter, when it arrived , it was a slice of crusty bread with 2 slices of tomato on top with melted cheese! I told we didn't want it as that was not a pizza & chef worryingly seemed to think it was! I ordered the small niciose tuna salad, that arrived with No egg, very disappointing visit!

We eat regularly at the George Payne with our 3 children.We understand this venue is 'dog friendly'.This evening , we ate with a dog beside us urinating over the floor as we ate our meal.Not particularly a pleasant experience.We approached the management and explained our dissatisfaction with the situation as we ate as our children couldn't eat their meals.We were told that this is a dog friendly pub,the dog in question was a puppy and this is to be expected! As valued customers (clearly not) we are thoroughly disappointed with the handling of this situation.Not a restaurant with particularly good hygiene standards or family friendly.

Nice airy pub, with a small play area for kids. If you're hungry, don't go for a sharing platter - the plurals on the menu are misleading as they are small portions and we only had one fishcake between two of us. The crusty bread described on the menu is actually a few small slices of toast. Kids chips came coated in salt. After hearing good reviews of this place we were really disappointed.

Terrible place of late. Used to be renowned for its roasts but I wont go back to check. Went yesterday with family - Chicken Caesar, hardly any chicken, stale croutons, no Parmesan so they replaced with cheddar and still charged 12.95. Kids pizza terrible, chips bad. Millefeuille was really bad.
Cant understand whats gone on here but will not go back. Cost a fortune for truly terrible food

We went out for dinner with friends and it was way too noisy to have a conversation. The food was really hit-and miss too, with a couple of us having to battle through really fatty cuts of meat. The food here used to be much better but the last few times it has really disappointed. The GP is much better if you're just having having a drink as they have a good choice of ales etc but sadly food is a no go for now.

Great local pub with tasty menus and specials board to boot. Beer Garden is beautiful with little huts for us to be chill in when it started raining. Can't ask for more outside seating when the sun is out, absolutely love the kids play area, as did our little ones.
Walk past here all the time and something always seems to be happening. Can't fault the menu, Can't fault the service and can't fault the atmosphere. All in all, quality pub in a quality area. It's a hidden gem in poets corner.

Place is really good to have drinks but I dont like food here at all. I went with friend and whatever we order, nothing was good, even not chips. They were not cooked well and burger server very very cold.

Visited for Sunday roast after hearing that they had a new chef with a famous award winning background :-). Was very excited to think of The George Payne returning your its previous greatness.
I’m guessing they don’t work Sundays as the food was ok, but not good. Questionable cuts of meat that make you wonder if they come pre cut or if they have some of the most perfect carving going on. Limited greens on the plate, mix of mashed veg and cook parsnips. Yorkshire puds were good though! (£12-£17 for roast)
Tried puddings and the difference between a £4 two scoop bowl of ice cream and the £7 Unicorn Surprise Sunday was a squirt of cream and two wafers.
Back on the onto the hope it improves list - might return in a few months but not a place to go for a roast for me
Original post: Used to be one of the best in the area, recently food quality has slipped as has customer care. Still a nice venue and great huts out in the garden which are great for small groups of friends to gather in
