I sought Kessler a few years ago because I needed the help and guidance of a head and neck cancer expert. I found that expert in Dr. Michael Stubblefield. He has helped me considerably, not only in the treatment he provides, but in educating me about my condition. His knowledge and instruction have been tremendous. In addition to Dr. Stubblefield’s treatments, he recommended physical therapy, and that is when I met Mary Ellen Hedley. Mary Ellen has a wealth of knowledge in treating patients such as myself. Her care and pt regime have improved my flexibility, mobility, and frame of mind. She’s knowledgeable, innovative and empathetic. She is very considerate of one’s condition, yet firm in her efforts to bring one back to a normal life. A couple of additional comments... I also have been a patient of Howard Lee, who runs the Kessler facility in Warren. He too is an excellent therapist. They are all tremendous professionals. Denis W. Schreiber

I get treatment for Lymphedema at the West Orange Kessler Outpatient facility. The treatment and therapist are godsends. The whole place has a healing vibe from the moment you walk in. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the other patients are inspiring. Really good experience, I'll miss it when I'm better.

I was an inpatient 4 years ago. I had been hit by a drunk driver and had 11 fractures. I had surgery to my knee the day after my accident & was transferred by ambulance to Kessler several days after surgery. I was in pain and exhausted. I was put into a room with 3 other patients who kept their televisions on day & night @ maximum volume. It was impossible for me to sleep. Nurses aides refused to turn them off even in the middle of the night . They were also too busy to take me for a shower or help me bathe during the 3 weeks I was there. Recommendation: TV off at 10 at night especially if 4 patients/room. Hire more staff so needs of basic hygiene can be met. My occupational therapist wanted to send me home after 3 weeks. My car insurance company was willing to allow me more inpatient rehab. I lived alone was single 66 years old and in a wheelchair. Since it was clear that I needed ongoing care and rehab., rather than authorizing it she called my sister without my knowledge to inform her that she needed to take me to live with her (my sister was working full time.) Ultimately I was referred to another rehab facility where I remained receiving necessary care & rehab for 2 more months. Recommendation: Kessler needs to put the needs of the patient before statistics regarding time spent in rehab. & not seriously damage the patient's relationships with family members. Despite the fact that I was not going home and didn't need it,, Kessler insisted that my insurance purchase a commode from them before they released me. I was told that this was done in every case. Clearly this was a money making deal for them. I had to ask a neighbor to carry it into my apartment where it sat in a box in the middle of my living room for 2 months. The food was good the physical therapists were good and the nurses (not the nurse's aids) were good. I might have had better care if the staffing had been adequate.

Well were do I begin.. #1 Arrival day was very scary.. Nobody available to welcome you, they put us in a room and told us to wait. I get that they may be busy but your are moving your family member into a place you don't know I would have liked someone to have made the welcoming a little more comfortable..#2 During the stay we had to document a couple of complaints, it seems that the nurses have different training or they just don't read what the patient needs.. On weekends they ran out of special dressing that was need it for bed soars.. We use to request extra during the week to make sure we had enough for the weekend..#3 the common area or the "family room area", tables broken, not enough chairs or tables for family members to sit and the only soda machine DOES NOT WORK!!!! Don't get me wrong some nurses and health aid were AMAZING!!! Mary, Giovanni, Annmarie, Bria, Samera to mention a few they should be teaching other employees how to care for the sick.. The therapy was great Tedi, Courtney, Samantha to mention a few were very professional, friendly , kind and very knowledgeable.. So, do I recommend it ? Yes, but advising you that you have to be on top of the staff in order to make sure your family member is well taking care of.. and that is the hard part.

The people at Kessler show great concern for my progress in rehabilitation and have custom-designed a program that ensures my quick recovery from my physical problems. Although there is no cure for my Parkinson's the rehab people at Kessler are helping me in keeping it from progressing and that it an excellent goal.

I have been suffering from Vertigo my entire life, I'm 68 now. I have tried many doctors and constantly looked online for treatments. Finally, I found Kessler in West Orange and I thought i would give it a try because of the reputation it has for rehab. I've had many vertigo tests over the years but nothing as helpful as I had at Kessler. Todd, my therapist took me through some tests and maneuvers and found I had BPPV, a benign vertigo where crystals become dislodged in my ear canal. He did some positioning maneuvers unlike I ever had and explained them all and made me feel very comfortable. I feel great now. It's amazing how knowledgeable Todd is about Vertigo , He obviously did a lot of research. This is how you would like to be treated!!!!I Thank you Todd.

It’s a 40 min. drive from my home to Kessler at West Orange. There are many Rehab places closer I could go to. I continue going to Kessler when I need Physical Therapy because the staff. They remember my name/face even if I haven’t been there in months. I always feel comfortable, like part of their family not just a patient. They listen to my concerns, pain levels or any other issues I may have. I wish I didn’t need Physical Therapy, but when I do. Kessler is my choice.

This place is quite extraordinary. I have been to two of their locations and both were very professional, beautiful, well equipped, and most importantly- staffed by amazing therapists. I have made great progress recovering from major surgery. My orthopedic doctor sent me here. He told me they were the best in New Jersey. I agree 100%.

Terrible experience here. My father was at Kessler in West Orange for rehab. He had low blood pressure...started showing symptoms of stroke. We asked for help...in fact begged for help over and over again. Nurses said they couldn't do anything until his doctor, Dr. Bapineedu gave them direction. Dr. Bapineedu took 7 hours to come see him. In the meantime, he did indeed have a stroke as the MRI showed. We have spoken to many doctors/neurologists since then and all that had to be done was for him to be hydrated ... had him lie down for blood profusion. Simple things Kessler nurses should have been able to do...and more importantly, the stroke should have been attended to by Dr. Bapineedu right away...not 7 hours later. Pay attention...while this is called an acute care facility, the 'care' was not there. Dr. Bapineedu neglected his care for 7 hours. #radhikabapineedu. #kessler #kesslerrehab

Kessler Rehabilitation is more then a facility that provide therapy for patients with physical and nerological disabilities.Kessler provide there patients tools necessary to live a quailty of life that realistically can help them to perform activities of daily living that they otherwise may not be able to do .On my first visit l observed the physical therapy staff working with my friend and other patients they were nuturing, professional, attentive and showed genuine concern for the patients well being and rehabilitation.I was extremely impressed with my therapist concern about my friends health and willingness to personally follow up with his doctor to address his blood pressure issue and his complaint of his ankle hurting .She immediately made a appointment for a leg brace and ask me to please try to get a blood pressure device to monitor my friends pressure .This experience took place after our second visit .My friend has had therapy in another facility yet the need for a leg brace was never mention.I was estatic to know he would be walking with assited devices and on his way to recovery in such a short brief period after having a stroke almost two years ago.Kessler staff even contacted me when my friend didnt show up for his appointments and contiued to reach out and offer assistance. The qualities mentioned is the type of qualities a family member look for when they are selecting a heathcare institution to provides a service for your love one.l highly recommend Kessler Rehabilitation to any family member that is seeking rehabilitation for there love one and l personally thank the staff for everything.

If you need physical rehab, this is the best place to go. Strokes, paralysis, brain injury, spinal cord injury - if they can't totally fix what's wrong, they will teach you how to live as fully as possible - they keep current with all of the latest technology and helpful equipment that will make life easier. The people who work there do so because they want all patients to return to full and meaningful lives. You will get as much emotional as physical support and encouragement. Family support groups help the family members and friends to understand what changes are occurring to them as well as the patients. Shared experience does help learn strategies for "life after rehab". I experienced great care and encouragement. I was taught what equipment I would need as a paraplegic. I learned to drive with hand controls and was helped to return to work. This is the best place I have experienced in the last 23 years since my initial spinal cord injury.

Unfortunately we have had a poor experience at Kessler. My husband fell at physical therapy and lost the ability to use the prosthetic that had been recommended by Kessler. We have been given misinformation on several occasions. We were first told that a special commode wheelchair would be recommended and my husband would receive training on its use. The company delivered the wheelchair and told us Kessler was suppose to supply the therapy/training. Then we were told there is no outpatient inhome therapy provided by Kessler, but Kessler would write a prescription for inhome therapy. When we did not hear from anyone, we were told that my husband had to make another doctor's appointment for something he had already been told would be done. Perhaps Kessler wants to collect another fee from our insurance company even though this is the same issue that we were trying to resolve for months. It is hard for me to believe that Kessler has such a high rating based on the experience we are having.

I was told this facility had a great reputation but unfortunately a couple of rotten apples spoil the bunch. If you have loved ones pay special attention because the care is not consistent. Some of the nurses are amazing and others are beyond rude!

Absolutely atrocious care. My father is recovering from a bad asthma attack and cardiac arrest that caused brain injury, and was making slow but positive progress. Then he was moved to Kessler institute in West Orange, and all it took was 4 days at this facility to undo all of his progress with their “care”, if you can even call it that. The nurses were extremely careless and aggressive with him, you would think he was livestock in a farm. They would forget to give him important treatments and just constantly looked confused as to how to handle him. A certain nurse in particular was very rude to my mother when she asked why he was in pain a particular day, saying that she should treat him herself if they don’t like what they are doing. The worst part was that they neglected to check him for blood clots regularly, and it resulted in him having another asthma attack due to blood clots forming in his lungs and they needed to rush him to a conventional hospital. I am extremely concerned that a renowned rehab facility like Kessler has allowed such low and negligent standards of care to be exibited. If you have a loved one who needs physical therapy and rehab, I suggest you take them elsewhere if you want nurses who are somewhat competent at their jobs and treat patients like they are human beings. Kessler institute in West Orange fails miserably at this.

Thanks You
We were all pleased that Mom was accepted at Kessler West Orange. But from then everything went downhill. We found the care of the doctors and most nurses was subpar. My mother-in-law had come from University Hospital and the nursing staff was top-notch. To try to get an aide or a nurse to help is impossible at Kessler and there is never anyone around. My family tried to stay to keep watch almost all day long. Mom's roommate told us lots of bad overnight situations. They are sure to keep you there for the entire time that Medicare will pay and then miraculously you can leave on day 20. Glad to report mom has done much better at home and I will never send her to Kessler or any rehab ever again because of this experience

The neuro cognitive department fails to return messages and it is near impossible to get an appointment. Once tested, I was provided a report that was sent to the primary dr. The report was full of inaccurate statements, that could have been confirmed by all of the other test results from previous doctors they insisted on getting. When I mentioned the errors, the PHD requested that I send her the corrections. I thought it was their job to correctly obtain general information about my condition and previous history. Needless to say, if you go there and they ask you questions, be very careful to speak very slowly, because they are incapable of taking notes!

Don't be fooled by the US News rating! This place is coasting off reputation. Physical therapy is done "concurrently" so you end up waiting around during your precious time. Much of the staff is rude, uncaring and take the attitude that they will only do the absolute minimum. We had multiple problems everyday.

Horrible services. They make you sign everything before they start, while assured me that there are no co-pay. After a few weeks, I get a bill for co-pay. As for the treatments, they are just going thru the motions so they can bill you and your insurance company. Go somewhere else.

The worse rehab hospital I have ever been to or stayed at. The service is absolutely terrible. In inpatient by fall the worse, you can ask for help and no one will help for hours at a time. You come here for a doctors visit and they have you wait for hours after your appointment. If you ask me do not come to this location.
