On one website it was advertised as the best fish and chips in town.
The service was nice, the food was good for the price. The decoration inside could be improved but you have the seaview, which is nice (at least when the weather is not rainy and foggy). So yes, it's a good place to eat, especially if you're with your family. But not sure if it's the best fish and chips in town...

Given the good ratings, we were somewhat disappointed by our experience. Waiting staff were rather distracted and took a long time to notice us given how quiet the business was. Having shown me, my wife and toddler daughter to a table with two seats, I had to ask for a third seat and he didn't think to offer us the high chair which it turned out they had.
Wanting some seaside fish and chips, we ordered the kids fish and chips, a haddock and chips, and the mixed seafood platter with two teas.
The fried fish was cooked perfectly well and was a good size but the chips appeared to have been freshly removed from the freezer before hitting the fryer. Perhaps we were too optimistic to hope for proper chip shop chips, but we did think this is what we would be getting.
My mixed platter (pictured) had a good amount of cod and whitebait, but a solitary piece of calamari and a surprise prawn that wasn't listed in the menu.
The pot of tea for two appeared to be the same size as a customer at another table had received all by himself, which seemed mean.
Overall, not terrible but we wouldn't go back or recommend it.

Very delicious. Service was fast. Toilets were a bit dingy which took away from the high class decor but I'm not visiting for the toilets. The batter was crispy and the chips were firm and fluffy.
I ordered the fried seafood platter and everything was cooked to perfection, my only complaint would be that I was given way too much whitebait. Some might call that a positive but I'm a big eater and I had to leave at least half of the whitebait. Otherwise great food and service.

Opposite i360. Nice food. My favourite are the scallop and the oyster - the garlic butter was excellent! Although at first we were told there was no lobster left for the hot seafood platter and they were ready to replace it with crab and reduce the price, somehow they manage to get us a half lobster at the end! Wonderful experience at Brighton!

Booked lunch here and the atmosphere was pleasant under shade in the sunshine seated on the pavement section. Service was attentive and the starters with pita bread were tasty, the whitebait good but the squid quite poor. Main courses of spaghetti and fish and chips were fine but the home-made moussaka was the smallest portion I have been served in thirty years of ordering such a meal from various restaurants and it also tasted poor with no substance to it. And finally, when the bill arrived, the drinks were overcharged compared to the menu price. I will look elsewhere in future for a good Brighton lunch.

Visited with party of four. Cod and chips good although chips abit dry and condiments were in little packets so not easy to squeeze out. Staff helpful and efficient although not sure if management share added service charge with staff?

Melrose was recommended by The Brighton Hotel. We requested hot sea food plater. Every thing in our plater was nice and good but the lobster. Lobster felt like not fresh. Place was nice and decent. Polite staff. Adding service charge without asking me was a let down but I paid. Could have tipped more!!!!. Average place...Service was good just lobster was a let down....

Cold draft coming in from the seafront due to no front doors at the entrance. Not the greatest food and rather expensive given the quality on offer, fish tasted almost like frozen supermarket fish. Lamb on the bone was tough and somewhat lacking in flavour. Staff were friendly enough but they made a mistake with my son's meal, which was later resolved.

Best seafood restaurant by far... Not too greasy and reasonable pricing. Friendly staff... Toilets slightly disappointing as well as each door was sticky to touch. More sanitiser in the restaurant and on the table could be better!

Delicious food, massive portions. A lot of fish and a lot of chips. But there were a lot of flies everywhere which was very distracting and annoying! A big shout out though to the French waiter with the cocktails, fabulous service!

Very big portion sizes and great value for money! The owners still in the restaurant ( apparently for last 50 years ) and atmosphere is a bit dated but you get fresh fish and seafood at a great price directly at the seafront!

Worst restaurant I have ever been to, plus a bad attitude. Ordered drinks that never arrived, asked for a high chair was told there were none but later offer by colleague to other customers. Chips were oven chips, fish was small and soggy, salad was rotten. When I asked waiter about the salad he said' yeah, yeah, you don't have to eat it, it's just for garnish'. Whoever wrote the article in 'the argus' saying this is the best in Brighton must have gone to the wrong restaurant. There are much better fish and chips in London. This is worse than your whetherspoons fish and chips!
Ps. Did some research it makes sense now, the original owners retired march 2019. This place has gone down the pan since. Your staff really don't care, such a sorry state. I full expect it to close down soon. now owned by the successful regency restaurant next door but why are they running this one so badly, the contrast in footfall is stark. So strange, are they running it badly on purpose to make the regency look good and to stop competitors moving in? I watched the staff put off customers who went to the regency instead. I am not visiting either now.

Not great at all. A wide open front entrance means you are left freezing cold from the sea draft, facilities not the best in that the table and chairs were rather uncomfortable. Staff were friendly enough and happy to help but made a mistake with my order - serving chips instead of boiled potatoes. Food was below average - the salmon was not dissimilar to frozen supermarket salmon, lamb was very fatty, tough and undercooked, vegetables were lacking in taste and far too crunchy, salad was like that you'd get in a McDonald's burger. To add insult to injury the value for money was nonexistent - £60 for two main meals, an awful tasting cider, a coke zero and two sides of broccoli and grilled tomatoes. Even half price on Eat Out to Help Out would have been slightly on the cheeky side. Avoid.

They do not care about social distancing at all. When I mentioned to our server that there were tons of women crammed into the very small bathroom, the manager rudely barged in and interrupted me with, “That’s not our fault, it’s up to the customer to take care of themselves.” I pointed out that they had a sign on the door to the toilets that said people had to socially distance, and also said I wasn’t blaming them, I just thought they’d just like to know. In response she waved her hands in my face and walked away. On top of all that the coffee was burned and the chips were soggy and flavorless. Not a great place, corona or no.

Now under new ownership since Mary & Tony retired after over 30 years. Some changes to the menu which is good. Prices are reasonable for both food and drink. Had a very good meal last night. The fillet of cod was excellent.
