I wouldn't agree that this deserves the moniker of Brighton's best fish and chip shop - my local chippy in South London does far better chips for example but the service is efficient and friendly, which is often a rariety these days.
I'd rate the food as less good, hence the 3 star rating. Chips were OK but a bit dry having clearlg been cooked before (despite the proprieter's claim that everything is cooked fresh). My scampi were fine - average and my partner's haddock was good if a little oily. Given the prices, I'd expect the quality to be better.
Satisfactory but I'm unlikely to return.

Whoever took the photos for their website did a lot of editing. The food that came was of much poorer quality than the photos and the fish didn’t taste fresh, had the seafood pasta and the tomato overpowered the prawn, baby octopus, and mussels.

Very not nice restaurants to spent for your meal, food is definitely not nice. We ordered surf and turf platter (came with steak, lobster, prawns), the plate was wet with all the juices from the steak. Literally disappointed with the food.

Very very very rude staff i am wondering how they run thier busieness he offer us a table and i was kindly just wondering about the table next to me which was empty nd if it was possible to swap my place and her rudly said the other is reserved if u want to go now 2 min and other client can come to ur place * it was sunday busy day" !!! U will wait ages for some one to come and will not have even second to ask for salt or water ...etc , they even donot know how to say proper thank u after paying the bill or even smile while dealing with us
I have been to many different good and very busy resturant through the world nd havenot feel or see such nervous waitresses who make u feel the same
The food was good to be honest but will nwver ever recommend the place or come to it again !!

Having been a regular at the Melrose fir over thirty years, and always had a wonderful time there, I had a very strange experience yesterday. My friend wanted to treat me and asked if I would like champagne. We ordered a bottle of Bollinger (£54) . When it came, it tasted like sherry and I realised it was probably old (champagne doesn't keep unlike wine) so I called the waiter over and told him the problem. He tasted it but I don't think he had any idea what champagne tasted like. He phoned the owner who said that if we didn't pay for it we would not be served, so we left. We went next door to the Regency and after the meal I went to the Melrose to explain but the owner told me I owed him £54 . Won't be going back. Unbelievable. Even if I was a complete stranger, the champagne was undrinkable and I should have got a new bottle! I think they probably don't sell a lot if Bolly there so it was probably very old.

The melrose is good Value fish n chips. It's friendly staff and old fashioned atmosphere is a plus. They also do great scallops in garlic. Dressed crab lobster etc.
The best in that area for sure! I would have given it 5 stars if they had gerkins(Wally's to us Southern ers )and pickled onions.
Locals use this one.
