A magnificent Victorian building that has been carefully restored to its former glory.

Completely useless. The phone agents just sounds like a broken record regurgitating what’s on the website rather than the advice you’re asking for

Called to ask about travel advice during the covid epidemic as the information on the UK government website contradicts that on other foreign government sites regarding travel restriction. Was met by a very unhelpful gentlemen who told me in no uncertain terms that "our advice is correct". When I questioned if it could be out of date given the additional information available he wasnt interested and kept insisting that the UK was correct. It seems the Foreign Office just wants to live in its own little echo chamber and believe that they are the oracle of all knowledge. Very sad.

Visited during the Open House weekend. They've done here magnificent work of restoration. Especially the Locarno conference room, the India Council room, and the Goetze murals. Impressive.

Though typically closed to the public, would highly recommend a tour of the FCO building if ever the opportunity arises. The impeccably maintained artwork and interior design is first class, unlike anything else in the city. Extensive grand hallways, paintings, carvings, domes, arched hallways and stonework set the FCO apart. Would be helpful to have more plaques/information available about the history of the building, the artists who did the paintings, what the imagery means, etc.

I was lucky enough to to be invited to a meeting in this historic and beautiful building. Not only that, but we were also given a guided tour at the meetings end. If you ever get the chance to visit, take it.

Only the tour guides like this horrible place. Suggest people realize what goes on here at UK tax payer expense and under our flag around the world. Maybe the building is nice, but the people who work here are........... Google "Foreign Commonwealth Office Warning" for the facts, then tell me the building is lovely!

Viewed this building during Open House weekend! No booking required, just show up, and the queue does move. And what a treat it was. In 1965 there was some talk of demolishing the building, but instead it was given a Grade 1 listing and in the 1980s renovation was suggested. In 1997 renovation was completed. Money well spent if you ask me. Of all the staircases I have seen only the one in the Paris Opera House is more grand than George Gilbert Scott’s Grand Staircase. Before you get that far though you will view the Durbar Court in the old India Office designed and built by Mathew Digby Wyat in 1866. Originally open to the sky, it had a glazed cast-iron roof added in 1868. All four sides of the Court are surrounded by no less than three storeys of colums and piers supporting arches. The two lower floors have colums of polished red Peterhead granite, while the top floor has Corinthian colums of grey Aberdeen granite. The third storey is further adorned with portrait busts of great figures in Anglo-Indian history and with names of Indian provinces and cities. The pavement of the Court is formed by Greek, Sicilian and Belgian marble. A feast for the eyes! You will get the opportunity to see the three rooms designed by George Gilbert Scott for the Foreign Office: the Grand Reception Room, the Larger Conference Room and the Dining Room. And two more staircasees: the Gurkha Stairs and the Muses’ Staircase with the octagonal glass lantern supported by goddesses and cherubs. I don’t think I got to see the Oval Room. All in all a must see building.

This was one the highlights of my first open house day in London. This building is just astonishing. The main attraction is the Durbar Court with its magnificent architecture, naturaly lit from the ceiling, with balconies on the first floor overlooking the main area. The other rooms around the court in both floors are also very impressive, it feels like you are in a palace. It is also a place of great historical importance, both dating back to the time is was the office of British India, and its recent history as the Foreign Office. Try to include it in your tour in open house. Surprisingly enough, the queue is not very big, but you have to go through tight security checks to get in.

A denizen of corruption and human rights abuse tolerance. The FCO will help the well connected, but not the average Joe. The FCO will bully the inconsequential yet peace loving nations of the world, yet suck up to murderous powerful states. The only English speaking nation that treats their nationals with more contempt than the UK is Australia (think Bali Nine). No matter what anyone thinks about the US, at least they stand up for their all their citizens abroad; the FCO trample over theirs as they bend over for corrupt cordiality. Truly, the human garbage of Europe with the trappings of the upper class in such a fine building, yet the morals of the sewers beneath their feet.

No matter what, I will keep visiting this each year during Open House. The interior is magneficent and it kind of remind me of Saint Petersburg palaces. Never seen anything like this in London and I highly recommend it.
