About 14 months ago, I got an alarm call at my business. The dispatcher asked me to wait away from the entrance, pending arrival of the police. The responding officer treated the situation as though there might be an Oceans 11 heist going on inside. He entered and cleared the place in a manner that was very professional. Over the years, a MUCH more casual approach had been undertaken to those rare calls. I am glad to share that the more recent response was conducted at a much higher level of professionalism. Law enforcement never gets kudos for doing a GOOD job, you tend to only hear a huge pile-on on those rare occasions when bad work has occurred. I just wanted to add some balance with an actual interaction. We need to encourage more positive interaction, and press for higher and higher levels of training. I wish I remember the officer's name. He is a role model for how you want a peace officer to be, and ought to get a performance bonus.

My neighbor's car was stolen six weeks ago. My car was stolen three weeks ago. And, last night, less than a block away the wheels were stripped from an SUV. Bang-up job Boulder Police Department.

The Boulder Police Department was wonderful today when I called and asked for a patrol by my house due to suspicious activity. Officer Hunter did a thorough search of my property and reported back to me immediately with her findings and suggestions. Thank you so much for your help and service!

I've never had a negative experience with these officers. Interacted with them on several occasions at my place of work, and they're always professional and respectful. Today officer Parker drove to my house to return my lost wallet, all contents intact. Meant a lot to me. Thank you again--you do great work.

I work on Pearl St Mall and this week alone I have been harassed and threatened by two different homeless men inside of my work establishment. This isn’t the first time I’ve dealt with something like this or have witnessed this happen to others. All of the times I’ve been a witness to these issues and have called the police over the years, I feel as tho nothing has been done. I realize there are stipulations in our laws and these men can’t be held at a prison and can’t be forced to go into a shelter. But there needs to be way more of a Police presence on The Mall and there isn’t during the winter time. I feel extremely uneasy about being on the Mall now. There needs to be more law enforcement on Pearl St Mall for the sake of keeping the public safe..period.

Very helpful. They answered my request for a wellness check promptly, and followed up later the same day. I've consistently been impressed with their professionalism, and they seem to deal much more tactfully with difficult people and situations than I ever could!

Apparently threatening to shoot a black man for picking up garbage is rewarded with $69,000 and 8 months of paid time off in the Boulder, CO police department. What a fantastic state! I’m so glad more rich white people are moving to Boulder - it will only get better from here!

Got hit by a car while riding my bike in a Boulder crosswalk. Went to the Boulder Police Station to file a report, waited 2 hours and was never even assigned an officer to get a statement or let alone take a report. I used to live in Chicago, and with a city of that size even they can get you in with an officer in 30 minutes or less. I filed an online report and got error message after error message, without ever being able to file a report. Take care of your citizens, this lack of care and accountability by a Police Station is down right embarrassing. Hopefully they find the guy who hit me, but I’m not holding my breathe.

This police department requires additional training in deescalation and situational awareness.

Tax payer dollars going toward corrupt cop. In a way you're condoning his behavior and enabling potential profiling by your corrupt force in the future. Why play it smart when there are barely any consequences for your actions. You protect and serve yourselves not the people.

Boulder PD is the most helpful team of officers we have ever had the pleasure of working with. Helped catch shoplifter today. I was really impressed with how fast and diligently they worked.

Apparently we still live in a day and age that an officer who took an oath to defend and protect the public, can unlawfully demand that an African American show written proof that he “Belongs” in his own residence for doing more of a public service of “picking up trash” than the Boulder Police Department can do for its own jurisdiction. And then have the indecency to hold him at gunpoint and threaten him with being tased for no reason. Oh and i almost forgot... what happened to the officer? He got 9 months of paid leave! The discrimination is sickening and you should be ashamed of your peers.

I have had two wonderful experiences with Boulder police. Both times the officers were caring and respectful of me and my family. The second time they were especially gracious and kind when talking with my 6 year old daughter. I appreciate their quick response and calm/warm demeanor when arriving. I cannot say enough to thank the Boulder PD! P.S. I am posting this as my oldest daughter since I cannot figure out how to switch to myself for this review. I am a 36 year old mom.

John Smyly should be ashamed. Protect and serve? Yeah right. Really have to not only ID a man cleaning up the area, but escalate it to an unnecessary point? Are the officers just that bored?

Worst police department on the planet. Good job confronting and harassing a United States citizen for picking up trash. Horrible.

Another example of what happens when things remain unchecked and unbalanced. Integrity, honor, truth....those words mean nothing when I see examples of men and women in blue abusing their appointed power. There used to be a feeling of reverence when you had a man/woman in uniform, however those days are gone and all we have left are remnants of what was. The fact our police have a closer resemblance to their slave patrol origin with their utmost hatred of anybody/anything associated with color, let’s us know we have more than a long road to go. I know for a fact that it starts at the top; police chief. The negative influence you “honorable” people have allowed to poison you, will be the downfall whence you’ve brought upon yourselves. Checks and balances. Checks and balances. “God Bless America, The Greatest Country on Earth.”

I see a lot of people having their cars broken into or stolen and the police are saying they are busy or don't have enough resources. Well if they stop trying to arrest citizens for taking pictures (which is a constitutionally protected activity) maybe there would be enough time in the day to find real criminals. or maybe stop using 12 police officers to illegally detain/arrest citizens for taking pictures (which is a constitutionally protected activity) that way there are more police officers available to find real criminals.

One of the few police stations that will continue to keep an excuse of an officer on payroll for a full year after that so called officer is caught on camera moments away from literally shooting an unarmed citizen outside his OWN residence while PICKING UP TRASH. That's just sad. This facility obstructs justice when their job is to enforce it.

My direct and indirect interactions with the police have always been in line with what I'd expect of a well-funded college town that has higher than average homeless population. They are more polite than I could be interacting with the homeless population and gracefully take more than their fair share of abuse. Emergency/non emergency services have always been prompt and professional. They are not perfect but deserve a five star rating.

They absolutely do not uphold the "protect and serve mantra". As I was attempting to unpack my vehicle on a recent tubing trip, I was standing at the corner of Arapahoe and 19th I believe as a red BMW flew past us in the wrong lane, through a round about, and then almost lost control on the second round about all while traveling at a ridiculous high rate if speed. No more than mere seconds passed and we witnessed 3 different patrol officers quite literally doing nothing but meticulously watching those of us just trying to enjoy our time and not get ran down by erratic drivers. Boulder police are little more than children in uniform. This may be a generalization of sorts, but as a whole, of my previous residences nationwide, the Boulder Police Department is absolutely the worst. The stories you read, are 9/10 true. "Protect and Serve" ????????

Saw the video of John Smyly who was allowed to resign and collect his benefits after threatening a man cleaning up trash outside his dorm. He also called for backup referring to the trash picking up clamp the man was using to clean his yard as a "some kind of blunt object". He knew exactly what it was and could have gotten someone shot. He later continued to refer to a claw made so people don't have to bend over to pick up light things as "a weapon". This is not justice. What can we the people do to hold people in power accountable for their actions? They clearly aren't doing it. This is insane and unfortunately not uncommon.

I am not only disgusted by the actions of "officer" Smyly, but also by this department for failing to terminate this racist, ego-tripping, power-hungry, fear-mongering, corrupt individual. How can any police officer look someone in the eyes and demand respect when this is how you behave in uniform. Now, because he wasn't disciplined or terminated, but instead allowed to resign (AND RECEIVE PAY FOR NOT WORKING), he will go on to perpetrate similar crimes in another department somewhere else. Shame on you Boulder Police. The whole department is a disgrace for allowing this to play out the way that it did. Shame. Shame on you.

I'd give 0 stars but that isn't an option. a thin blue line of 8 police held guns on a resident for picking up trash at his own apartment complex(probably cause hes black). it took 20 minutes before a supervisor came and told Officer Smyly to give the man back his ID because he is in fact a resident and he can't just keep is ID because he doesn't want to give you a date of Birth. amatuer punks. the department refuses to fire Officer Smyly because they are cowards and protect there own at all costs no matter the situation.

Boulder Police Department arrested activists for constitutionally protected legal acts. Tyrants who are about to be taught a well deserved lesson. Unfortunately, it will be the taxpayers who pay for the BPD's crimes and mistakes. Police are almost never held accountable.

Officer Frederking was smug, condescending, and quota-minded, joining his likeminded department members. The encounter I had today was laughable and the videos of Boulder PD’s very own, behaving racially discriminatory and abusive, speak for themselves. Literally ASHAMED to be apart of this community where this police force conducts itself. Your arrogance and negligence appalls me.

I hope that young man files a civil lawsuit against you Smyly. It’s not his obligation to prove that he DOES live there, you have to have RAS that he DOESN’T live there. Providing his school id (which he lawfully didn’t have to provide) should have been the end of the interaction. Poor policing, poor training, but Smyly still walks with all his benefits and $69,000.

Welcome to Boulder, where a cop can come into private property and investigate your right to be there. Communist garbage. This is what we get for letting commies roam free.

The worst police department I’ve ever come across... Mid-day, my car window was smashed in and broken into and they stole items of mine. I called the non-emergency line and requested an officer out on scene and they told me to file online. I told them I didn’t want to file online I wanted to speak to an actual officer as less than 8 months ago my car was hit on the same street yet then they convinced me to file online despite my pleas. They didn’t come up with any suspects and I never heard from them again, I might add. The representative eventually agreed and told me an officer would be out on the scene soon. An hour after calling, I called once more to make sure an officer was coming out. Again, the representative reassured me he was coming, he was just busy. Finally, after waiting 2 and a half hours, an officer called me and told me he wasn’t coming out. I had skipped my class and appointments to wait around for the officer they supposedly had coming — for over 2.5 hours. On the phone the officer’s best advice was to not keep my stuff in the car. These people really don’t care. It’s so sad — despite the recent backlash of police I still had hope and comfort in the police department. Not anymore.

The Boulder police department are so efficient, hard-working and genuine! I've had 3 experiences with them in the last year that I have lived in Boulder and all have been positive experiences and all police officers and employees worked hard to assure that my needs were met and even went out of their way to come to my apartment building to let me know my phone had been turned in by someone who found it. ALL of these officers are astoundingly efficient, respectful and downright just to everyone that comes in contact with them. THANK YOU
