Interesting little shop with lots of events. Overwhelming pencil selection. Brainchild of Alain de Botton. Worth a stop if you are in the area.

I wonder why I had it in my head that the School of Life was just like an Alpha course; naval gazing, hippyish, too self interested. It can't have been the place itself, because I like calm, quirky bookshops and I like Bloomsbury. Either way, I was very, very wrong. Last night, I went to D & AD's annual lecture, held in UCL's Logan Theatre, which this year was a four-part taster from the School of Life. As an email obsessed multi-tasker who really could do with chilling out a little more, it was as if they'd designed the programme for me. School of Life covered how to spend free time (I'm not going to forget a big neon slide saying simply: 'RECLAIM IDLENESS'), how to live with technology well, how to change the world in your day-to-day living and finished with Nick Southgate's hilarious lecture on how to be cool. Or, rather, why we all want to be cool, the top-secret formula behind coolness (sorry, I can't share it) and Malcolm Gladwell's 'tipping point' theory. I always find D & AD events pretty inspiring and this was something else; incredibly relevant, funny and full of food for thought.

The store has a lot of interesting literature to read. The only downside was that the service was a bit slow.

I walked in and spent 20 minutes trying to figure out what this place was about, certainly not philosophy but rather kitsch.
