The Quantum Science and Technology Institute brings together the quantum science community and helps collaborative research. It provides a platform for public, users, and policy makers. Progress in quantum technologies is at an exciting stage. Applications that harness the non-classical features of quantum mechanics to perform tasks hard or impossible with conventional technologies are now reaching beyond the laboratory into industrial development. Some of these, such as quantum cryptography and communication have already arrived in the marketplace, while others – such as quantum computation – remain a significant technological challenge, but all have the potential to bring revolutionary advances compared to their classical counterparts. The UCL Quantum Science & Technology Institute (UCLQ), inaugurated in May 2014, serves to coordinate and support research across the university across a range of departments and disciplines, helping to develop this fast-advancing field of research. The institute promotes engagement with quantum science and technology, both for the public and for end users, including a range of public events, a network of government and industry stakeholders, and research into the responsible innovation policies. Quantum science and technology harnesses the special properties of matter on tiny scales, going beyond the limits of classical physics and conventional technologies. It has potentially revolutionary applications in electronics, computer science, communications and many other important fields.
