If you want quality and cheap (for London) food, this place is ideal. Great fish and chips which, sadly, is an exception in the UK. All the pies are excellent. The staff are always good. There's the option to eat-in though I always took it out. If you work within a 10 minute walk and you want a quick meal, always give this place some consideration.

Cute and small restaurant. I got the haddock fish & chips and it was delicious! Good service. Came as a solo traveler and it was totally fine!

Lovely staffs and food!!! We were here just after they opened and everything is so fresh and the crew seem really upbeat. There’s a free jukebox in this restaurant and they served me a generous amount of curry sauce, great for sharing and to dip your chips and fish in. Will be back!!

Wasn’t so impressed with the Fish n Chips here. The batter is quite bland. Definitely would be able to get a tastier ones in the markets.

It would be helpful to have been warned that the chips are cooked in duck fat before eating. If there was clear signage that the restaurant isn't, in any way, vegetarian friendly, then it wouldn't have been so insulting. Not catering to vegetarians is fine, but to purposefully not tell people is not acceptable.

My haddock and my wife’s cod were so wonderful that I felt like bowing down and saying, “I am not worthy!” These British have Fish and Chips down to an art form. As an American I get it now: I’ve had some good fish and chips in places like Minneapolis, Boston and Seattle. But it’s the batter that the British have mastered. It’s so light that I was able to eat everything without feeling stuffed. And something about the tartar sauce was just...better.

Have been in London over a week conducting painstaking research on the absolute best fish and chips in town...this place was it???????? The cod was flaky and fresh, the tartar was nicely laden with tarragon, the chips were frustratingly hot as I continued to burn my tongue, unable to wait to eat them. Best ever ????

A great little fish and chips restaurant tucked away in a street off Oxford circus. Appeared popular with locals and tourists alike. Portions were generous (small cod and shops in the photo) and tasted delicious. Staff were friendly and service was quick. Only criticism is they charge £2.75 for curry sauce but suppose that's London prices for ya!

Did a Google search for "best fish and chips near me" and Golden Union was #2 in the list. Checked out the various menus and chose Golden Union as the best price. A good choice. If you want great fish and chips with the large size able to feed two, this is the place. Doesn't have the atmosphere of a pub, but for a chippy it is well worth it

Great fish and chips. Both the cod and halibut were great though I preferred the halibut. Light batter and nice chunky chips though could have been cooked a bit longer. Tasty tartar sauce. Small fish & chips was 13.95 so a bit on the expensive side for the portion. Very good service.

Good value food for its cost. Good service. It's a quite decent and pleasant place to grab something to eat while out and about! Will go again!

Nice food, I was expecting more selection of draft beers but still fine. The only thing is the service is a little slow. Otherwise, recommended!

We really enjoyed the fish and chips, it was really good. The plates are generous. I ordered the small one and I couldn't finish it. The atmosphere is nice but is not the typical pub. The service is nice. We really enjoyed, I would recommend it.

We both had the cod fish and chips with mashed peas - delicious! Can really recommend this place. Complete with a free jukebox, a variety of milkshakes and ciders (as well as wine and beer). Lovely!

Dish was served hot, batter was nice and crispy, fish was fleshy with a slight hint of sweetness. An above average plate of fish and chips I would say, but I find it too pricey. A small plate of cod fish and chips came up to 15.20£. Unlike many other stores, Golden Union also does not have any lunch sets/offers. Steady stream of customers during the time I was there, thus you can see the kitchen team constantly frying up fresh batches of fish and chips. Service was attentive and prompt!

Love the freshness and juicyness of the fish here. The oil they use is very clean and feels very light when you eat it. I would definitely recommend the cod and chips. Also tried their calamari rings, there only are 4 pieces however it was super fresh and fried to perfection!

Awesome fish & chips, great service with a big smile! Just one down side, the ventilation isn’t great so you smell like fish & chips after the meal. It gives an authentic smell though I don’t personally like it. Having this wonderful meal on 13 Dec 2018, lunch!

Very tasty fish and chips eatery. The front area offers takeaway while the back offers table service overlooking a 'foliage menagerie.' The small portions are well sized and if you are with a friend you could easily just split one large plate and be very full. Aside from the varying arrangement of fish choices like cod, haddock, sole, and salmon, to name a few; they also serve fish bites and chips and curry sauce. The jukebox is always free and different assortments of beverages keep the place lively. The rarely offered banana flavor milkshake is a nice alternative to a soda or ale.

Amazing fish and chips and fantastic service.. Def try the haddock and chips. Simple and light food but deceptively so, the flaky fish and batter are just outstanding..

Golden Union serves up a delightful plate of fish and chips. The fish tastes fresh and the batter that they use is crispy and light. Their chips could do with some more crisping up but that’s just me. They have an extensive fish menu. Service is good, prices are just a wee bit expensive but it’s worth it. The vibe of the restaurant is that of an American diner but with British soul.

Get here early to beat the crowds. The food is the best fish and chips around, and the smalls are not small! You won't leave hungry. The food comes out quickly, and the staff are always happy to answer questions.

We wanted to try Fish & Chips in London and we found this address on a website listing the best fish & chips restaurants in London. We had the cod (the picture is for the small portion!) and the king prawns. I wanted to taste all the sauces but the tartare was the best (and it is included in the plate, you can have more if you want) The staff is very nice. There’s also a jukebox (free!) where you can choose you music: I enjoyed the playlist that was already on. The food was very good, the fish was fresh and I enjoyed my drink (rose hip gin tonic very tasty! I do recommend this place!

Lovely place for fish and chips. But sausage in a bun (hot dog) is very good.

Great fish in huge portions! Some chips didn't seem as freshly made as the other portions, and the mushy peas were a bit bland, but we were happy with our over-all-experience. The fish was amazing and the milkshakes lovely - enough to come back for!

Found this place in an alley off of the main drag. Ordered the large cod and chips and it did not disappoint. Cod was breaded perfectly and was very crispy on the outside. Inside was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Setting the bar high for fish and chips here as I plan to eat it many times.

Decent fish and chips. Not mind blowing but the haddock was good. Cod respectable-we took a ‘small’ cod and was able to divvy it up among 2 kids. Good seating. Friendly staff. Would eat here again if in the area.

We came here because it's said to have great fish and it does! Great food, great chips and great mushy peas. Had to add a lot of salt though as I think they forgot to Great if you like BIG portions. I was full after not even have of the Small portion. And the staff seems a bit uninterested, but they do their job! Good fast food place And all fish is ethically fished and prepared and local so that is a big plus

Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. After a long day in London, this is the best place to enjoy a quick Fish and Chips. Also, the large portions are actually large, very good.

Great fish and chips! Read the story in the attached image. They change their oil regularly and stuff like that. I ordered the large cod fish and chips for 15.50 and the scampi was 12.95.

Came here for our dinner after storming off from a 3-Michelin starred restaurant for treating us with disrespect and discrimination, it definitely was the best decision ever as the food is super delicious here and although busy the server was as welcoming as ever and made sure my chips were cooked just the way I like!

Pleasantly surprised with how good the fish and chips were here. Batter was cooked through and extremely crispy on both the fish and the sausage. The chips were also delicious. Table service was good. Replaced my go-to for fish and chips in the area.

Disappointing, used to be so good but the last couple of takeaways have been really poor. Fish is generally good but depends on who the chef is. Chips are hit and miss, often very small pieces of potato. Order anything else and it's not good, saveloy and sausage were both barely warm and had obviously been sat there for a while, mushy peas didn't even register as warm. Eating in is usually always good but if you takeaway they seem to give you the worst of everything, wouldn't recommend, there are far better places to go

I usually go here for lunch when I want fish and chips and I have not been disappointed. Large portions of chips and the cod is just as big. Certainly to fill you up for lunch or dinner. You can have fish and chips to go or if you wish to sit down there is seating near the back. Prices are high but it is located in Central London. It can get rather busy but worth the wait.

Delicious! All the food was great. We had fish and chips and fried halloumi. The poor servers were overworked and it took a long time to get anyone’s attention to order and then to get the bill.

We had cod & fries and plaice & fries. It was really good and the fries was very big.(not the kind you get in fast food chains) and It was also in a very big portion. We ordered the small one but couldn’t really finish all the fries. The service was good. One of the staff is very kind and energetic.

It is quite nice and clean place. I like their red flooring. Food is all right, good size portion- not the cheapest though. There are many fish&chips places you can definitely pay less. Some music in the background would be most welcome.

Went for a late lunch. Restaurant is small and has a 50s diner feel. They offer lots of options for fish and chips. We ordered a haddock and chips. It was lightly battered with an amazing tartar sauce. Service was good, but assumed we wanted to tip on the "optional tip". For what you get, it is overpriced.

There is no way this is 4/5 star restaurant! Visited today for a fish 'n' chips. Took smaller version (check photos). Food came in ~5 min. At first glance - presentation. Well presented, lemon aside, decent amount of chips, fish sauce and fries fish. Separated into 3 parts: one - no vinegar, another - no salt, third - salted. Guess what happened? A lake of water appeared in my plate. I asked what's this? Is the fish frozen ? Nope, they said, came fresh today. After removing fried cover from fish which was very mushy and absolutely not crispy as it should be - I tasted the fish. Bland. Tasteless. Feels like eating nothing. Very very mellow, feels like McDonald's fish in fillet o fish. Chips were fine and sauce was great. Look at the photos... I am not joking about mushiness. Basically I left hungry. Bill was high enough. I expected more. Restaurant location, design, staff were wonderful. Very kind, helpful. Thanks for 2 girl working there for serving me: Brazilian and Romanian. Sorry that I did not like your fishNchips. I have tasted and been to far many restaurants that I may be spoiled or just expect more. (Bill: 14£ for ONLY fish n chips: medium, tap water comes free)

I was eager to try Golden Union Fish & Chips because it was rated by timeout website as one of the top 10 best Fish & Chips in London. Sorry to say that whoever rated this has never had good fish and chips in the UK let alone London. I am surprised it is rated so highly in reviews but I can only assume that is mostly from tourist who too never had good Fish & Chips in the UK. Let's start with the service, i was greeted if you can call it that by someone who clearly had a chip on her shoulder. I sat down and once I was ready to order I waited patiently for someone to take my order but no one came. It was not busy and I was seated at the front near the servers so no reason for the simply being ignored. Perhaps, this was like Nandos where you go up to the cashier to place your order so that is what I did. When I did I politely asked should I order here or should I wait at the table? I was told to wait at the table and someone will see you, I said I was waiting for a while ready to order so the lady then walked with me back to my table and took my order. So far this has been a very uncomfortable experience, hopefully the food is good. I asked how big was the small cod and chips and she said it is big don't worry and so that is what I ordered. When it came I was surprised but I guess from the poor service I received so far I should not have been. The fish was indeed small and clearly not worth the £14 I had to pay. However, I still did not want to judge too early as maybe it taste really good. Again, I should not be surprised the fish was not good. The fish was skinny like a cucumber and small but more importantly the batter was not crispy and lacked any flavour. The fish itself seemed fresh but the inside was soggy and wet almost like this was cooked by someone who had never cooked fish before, great way to ruin quality fish. The tartar sauce was also not good the only decent thing on my plate was the chips, hard to get that wrong. Overall, this is a terrible Fish & Chips place and no one should go to this place if they want decent Fish & Chips.

Fast service, great food. Got COD with clips. Fish was cooked well and the batter was crispy. Everything was cooked fresh. If you are around the area would definitely recommend giving it a try. They do have other items on the menu if you want to try something else.

Non-hyperbolically THE best fish and chips I've ever had. There was simply nothing to fault it... and I can usually find something! Crispy, crackly batter, with a silky, super-fresh fish nestled within. Chips that would make your local shop cry with embarrassment. Actual homemade tartare sauce with tarragon to class it up, homemade curry sauce - slightly katsu style, delicious! and homemade buttery peppery mushy peas. Yum. Yum. Yum. Service is quick and efficient and friendly despite the constant churn of customers. The restaurant is clean and smells of fresh ingredients and clean cooking - non of the days-old oil whiff you sometimes get. Price is extremely sane. We tried very hard not to finish our portions but failed miserably.

Great fish and chips. In the past, I've struggled decide which was better for fish and chips in London, this place or Poppies. On my last visit here, I think this place edges it. The batter is light and crisp, and the fish chunky and juicy. I would say though, that the chicken and mushroom pie that I also tried wasn't the best I've had. But for fish and chips, not sure you can find much better in central London.

You'll want to get here early because this is one of those places that is touted as having the "best fish and chips" in London. Hence, the massive line. I suggest buying some chips to eat in line while you wait. Trust me, it's a great idea. The food at the end is good enough such that you won't be too full to finish your meal.
