Named after the eponymous character in Alice in Wonderland, the Mock Turtle is a quaint tea shop by the seaside in Brighton. It's cramped and cluttered, the toilet is at the top of a narrow set if stairs. The crockery is white and blue. There's lunch and an assortment of cake and tea. The spot is busy. We saw a tour group of 50 or so foreign students head into the basement for a tea. In short, exactly what you expect of a tea shop. We had fish and chips and three cream teas. The chips were more like French fries, skinny and a little crunchy. The fish came with peas and a generous helping of tartar sauce. The tea was good. The scones were large and decent. There is a small patio. The prices are reasonable. The staff were rushed off their feet and unable to check in on us.

Amazing food! Good tea, nice atmosphere. The waitress would have been better if she had smiled more, could be a cultural thing, could have been having a bad day, but it didn’t ruin how wonderful the food was.

It was the closest one to where we was and by the reviews it scored highly. We ordered up a couple of meals and a tea (which was tea leaf????). When my burger came out it looked ok but the burger itself wasn't great and not that hot, the service was nice and polite and it wasn't that dear. If we come back to sunny Brighton we'll give this one a miss...????

Poor service, our waitress was really quite rude to us telling us rules that don't exist on the menu and being dismissive. Later they were rude again to my friend when we paid (separately), saying "whatever" and not even returning a thank-you. We ordered cream tea and they don't even have proper scones, they are just bread buns cut into vaguely scone-shaped rolls...so bad. (PHOTO ATTACHED) We brought foreign guests and I was embarrassed to watch them eat. We had to sit downstairs and it was dingy and quite damp and dark. I would not recommend to anyone.

Tea shop that bakes their own scones and other goods. The shop has plenty of seats, considering there are seats in the basement and I believe upstairs. I ordered the cream tea (£7), which came with a pot of tea of your choice, and 2 scones (white, fruit, wheat?). The scones were very large and filling. Cute and cozy decor with many china plates and pots. Minimum charge for card is £5.

Found this little tea shop walking through the town and I must say it's quite good in there. At first glance it seems normal but when you step in they are quite unique. Its gets busy in there so best get there early. They do have s variety of teas I must say and price was really cheap. They even bring you extra water for your tea pot so you get your monies worth. Great place for afternoon tea to relax. They even serve cakes and food. Only disappointing part was the area I was smelt of raw eggs and I was not pleasant however it's a good place to visit.

Very close to the national express bus stop, hidden up a tiny connecting street is a tiny gem of a tea house. Inside the shop is very small... Not good if you're in a wheelchair or really big. However most of the seating is outside. In fact for this review I did not go inside the shop, just enjoyed the high tea and ambience with a friend. Seating yourself outside, the mock turtle has some very efficient staff. They gave us time to look over the menu before coming over. I had the cream tea. Here it is a lot cheaper than many other places. It comes old fashioned loose leaf tea with a strainer. This is a great touch as it just feels very nostalgic. The crockery is all mismatched which just reminded me of my grans high tea. The cakes are all homemade. There is a bakery up above the tea house. They make Their own jams as well. It is a fantastic place to go when it is good enough to sit outside. Maybe a bit cramped if you have to sit inside. Great value old fashioned cream tea. Proper homemade cakes.

When ever we visit Brighton we always come here for breakfast, quality of food is fantastic with a huge choice of cakes, teas and snacks. The full English breakfast was great and made with good quality ingredients. The place is small but also has outside seating, staff were friendly and service quick.

They serve a fine breakfast as well as lots of lovely looking cakes. I had beans on toast with poached egg, a good start to the day. My husband went for Welsh rarebit. The tea is loose leaf, in a teapot with strainer. Lovely.

This is a proper little tea shop! Really good tea and coffee, and the most amazing cakes being baked on the premises. We enjoyed our morning coffee so much we went back for afternoon tea. ????

The cakes look amazing and it's a nice space. However it was freezing inside and the service was hilariously bad. They only had one other table but after a chilly reception we sat there for ten minutes without anyone offering drinks or coming to see us. When we left the waitress just stared at us and didn't say a word. A Brighton institution but I can't imagine it'll last out the far superior competition in short walking distance. Only giving two stars because the cakes and range was impressive to look at even though we didn't get that far.

This is a great little find. It has a lovely cosy feel and great service. All the food we had was very well cooked and lovely. The scones were as someone else posted huge! And my daughter says the carrot cake was the best she has ever had. They also do proper loose leaf tea and a very good espresso. Well worth a visit.

This place is a hidden gem that hasn't changed in 30 years! I recommend the cream tea with scones the size of your head, or the cinnamon toast for a lighter bite.

Staff were really friendly, but I am sorry you can't serve cream tea with whipped cream, it just doesn't work. Especially when the pictures in the window show clotted cream. A shame because the place looks lovely and the other cakes were great.

Sweet tea shop and the history of the tea shop(one of the oldest in brighton and owned by generations of the family) is very nice! However it's a shame you just look onto a stone wall from the café and the interior itsself could be a bit more dusted and made fit for customers, even if the old antique tea shop is authentic. Also I went here for scones and they were okay, but most importantly they were not scones.. Just very dry nearly stale bread with butter jamd and cream.. Shame but still would come again for a cuppa.. No more though

I went to the mock turtle on Saturday with a coach group. The lady with the blonde hair who seem to be in charge was very rude to how tour guide. I was on the couch next to the tour guide when she explained on the phone to the lady with the blonde hair how many people will be coming when we got there the lady with the blonde hair lied and said to how tour guide that she said a different amount which was unture. It was the worst cream tea I have ever had. It was more like a bread cake it was definitely not a scone and it was fake cream as well. she put a pot of tea on the table for four when I explained I only drink coffee she said but that's tea for four I had to ask for a coffee again. I will never ever go there again.

Scones and cakes were incredible not to mention the tea-amazing! All the staff were very kind and the store was so cute, pretty and clean. We had two pots of tea, two large scones and two cakes-yet the price was so cheap compared to what they provide. I regret not tipping more.
