If you are afraid of buying "away from home" because of the risks involved with shipping, then go buy from Arthur Johnson. First class packing and postage rates takes all the worry out of buying at auction. I will certainly go back again and again.

Love the auctions. We visit on Friday as you can look around the auction rooms and leave an absentee bid. When you watch the auction live on line the next day with your number and registration you can bid on other things. Pick up the next day if you win anything. All nice and easy to do. Must be I can do it ????????????

Arthur Johnson has adapted well during the COVID restrictions helped by the large and well spread out site. Although I miss the ability to examine and handle the goods at the time of auction, the live online auctions mean I can bid from the warmth of home and the current booking system for collecting lots is a lot more organised than the usual scramble!
Looking at the operation in more normal times, as I have said, the site is large, running a number of themed rooms simultaneously in their Saturday auctions (for example, modern furniture/collectables/machinery & general etc). There is also a street market running on site which gives a bit a variety for those not dedicating the whole day to the auctions themselves.
For those not very familiar with auctions, they can run quite quickly--given the number of lots, they need to--so bidders need to keep focused to avoid missing lots. Catalogues are available online in advance.
All the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The only thing I would change (for normal times in-person auctions) is the registration system. The need to queue to register every time seems an unnecessary inconvenience for regular buyers. Could we not have permanent, or at least annual, bidding cards issued as many other auctions do?
Overall, one of the best run and diverse auctions I have used both in normal times and during the current restrictions.

I have used this auction premises for over 30 years????. I have never had an issue with any of my purchases until last week. I spoke directly to Jason, the principle auctioneer and manager , of saleroom 3/4 and explained my problem. Quickly, professionally and in a friendly manner he immediately resolved my issues. I love this auction house! This was a regular haunt for my dad and myself every Saturday for 20+ years. We both have houses full of Jason’s furniture!! This year has been a little different, however, the online auctions work fantastically well. The things I sold were easy to enter into saleroom 2 (all staff as lovely, friendly and helpful as ever). I thoroughly enjoyed watching the live action, which was really easy to access. All round excellent, as expected from such a well run establishment. I have been buying from auction rooms 3/4 & 5 for years without any problems and recently started pourchasing from auction room 6. Be very careful when purchasing from this auction room as the items may be completely broken or incomplete, making them a total wate of money. I have been advised to ask for a condition report prior to purchase but you could also visit auction room 6 and check the items before bidding. Do not rely on any sticker on the box from major wholesalers giving a brief reason why the product was returned to them, as they are misleading. You will need to check the contents correctly and if electrical - they work, as unlike other salerooms, saleroom 6 do not give accurate descriptions due to not being able to check electrical items for correct working or non electrical for correct contents. Although the staff are very friendly the auctioneer for saleroom 6 seems unwilling to resolve any issues, unlike Jason from room 3/4. Only bid on items from SR 6 if you know prior to bidding that they are servicable or you are prepared to take a gamble and loose your money by buying possibly useless items.

I have been attending auctions here for a few years now. I have both bought and sold. The service I have received at AJ has far surpassed any other local auction houses.
During the latest Covid 19 lockdown I have been impressed with the safety measures put in place by the salerooms and I have felt completely at ease.
A special mention to Sam and Jason for their professional approach to auctioneering in such testing times.
Thanks to Dave, Rich and Tim for all the help loading/unloading in better times and their humorous banter!! The office staff are always welcoming, polite efficient and helpful.
A truly well run organisation even in such difficult times. Everyone take care and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

I visit lots of different auction houses nationally and Arthur Johnson's is one of, if not the, best. Top marks in every aspect from admin and accounts to knowledgeable friendly and helpful staff. Last Sunday I went to collect some purchases and was "served" by Phil Poyser the MD. Your auction house is a credit to you Mr Poyser !

I had never bid on anything in an auction before and the thought of it was quite scary (let’s face it we’ve all seen the films where people end up buying random items for a lot of money!) so I’ve placed bids through the website. This was so easy and good fun, all you have to do is decide how much you want to pay for something and enter your bid (a bit like eBay). Once the auction has ended you get an email to advise if you’ve been successful. If you have won a lot the payment process is really easy to use too.
I would definitely recommend online bidding if you are new to auctions and if you’ve got any questions customer services are really helpful and friendly.

Great auction house.
I've been bidding and buying at auctions for a while and the auctioneers at Arthur Johnson & Sons are great, very friendly and polite.
They also offer pack and postage service which is not too expensive so it makes buying from them a lot easier for people who cannot collect the lots themselves.

Bought a great set of six Arlo dining chairs at a price at least £135 better than a well known auction house nearby , and then to finish the job off also bought a lovely extending dining table and with the exceptional services of R Removals ( on site delivery service ) they were all delivered on Monday lunch time after Saturday 8th of Feb auction. Perfect !

I went on Saturday with my grandson who has autism I wanted to buy some electrical items which I received by e mail when I went in auction room 5 and six I was refused on the grounds it was to dangerousl I said I could pick him up and wouldn't be any bother to anyone I was still refused said how can I view the items if I'm not allowed in with my grandson, the reply i got was well next time don't bring your children I said I have been coming here since I was five years old and now I'm 55 this type of behaviour is unacceptable and very rude the reply I got was don't come if you don't like it. so won't be from now on sad I have nice memories from my many many visits
