The staff were so friendly and helpful it made the visit twice as good! Beautiful grounds, saw trout and a perch in the river. Will definitely go back in June when more of the roses, shrubs are in bloom. Fabulous array of tulips. Lovely day thank you.

We parked, handed in our timed entry ticket and started our walk. As is becoming the paranoid norm, there were one way routes and signs telling us to keep our distance as we explored the gardens. The first route was the riverside walk, incredibly peaceful and beautifully clear waters. Although the car park was busy most people seemed to be around the cafe area so most of the gardens were quiet. After our walk we decided to join them and had a coffee and the inevitable cake before continuing with a circuit of the house. We stopped at first to visit an exhibition of lockdown arts and crafts which had some interesting exhibits. Mottisfont is a real mix of styles with Tudor and Georgian (I think) and a few traces of the original 12th century Augustinian Priory. It seemed to lack a grand entrance which seemed strange for a house of this size and status. The gardens were spectacular with beds of daffodils sheltering under centuries old plane trees that looked more like chaotic Ents than anything natural, with gnarled and twisted limbs waving in the breeze. The breeze. It was one of those days where, in shelter you could have actually sunbathed, in the open the 'breeze' meant I wished I'd worn a jacket! Deb was in her element as every time I thought we'd finished the gardens she'd find another loop for us to do. The winter garden had some very sculpted plants and the most entrancing bird song! I guess I'm getting old but I literally stopped in my tracks to listen to this bird's repertoire, quite amazing. The original 'font' that gave the house its name was also in this area. The final garden was the walled garden and I have to say, we'd saved the best til last. For someone with almost zero knowledge of botany I can at least appreciate colour and the tulips in this garden were superb. A real blaze of colour from the mass plantings of tulips was offset by the weatherbeaten red of the brick walls.

Beautiful, relaxing fresh air location. Very nice location. Only gave 4 stars because the house is closed as there are lockdown restrictions and also we were not told about the map. We rushed to see as much as possible as we only got a late entry appointment. We missed visiting most of it. It is not fair considering we traveled quite a long journey to see this premises

Beautiful as always... One of the smaller National Trust places, but always a lovely way to spend a couple of hours wandering and having a coffee... Felt very COVID-safe with the systems they've put in place to!

Such a lovely place to visit, much enjoyed by all generations in our family. Beautiful grounds, the river, the walks across open countryside, 3 'secret gardens' (according to our 5 yr old granddaughter). Not to mention the fab cafe, the shop, plant sales and the amazing art and craft exhibitions. We feel very fortunate to live so nearby.

Only the garden is open now for obvious reasons, and you have to pre-book a time. The blossom and flowers are coming out and make a lovely display. Mottisfont is fairly small but has good accessibility with good paths and bridges over the streams. There are a variety of different gardens laid out. There is a good cafe and a couple of kiosks dotted around.

Even with covid restrictions perfect place to have a walk around, have a own picnic and enjoy beautiful flowers. Lots of toilets & ice cream spots for kids too ???? Were a bit suprised that ball games were allowed but truly suprised how much green space there is and how peaceful is atmosphere. We went on rainy & windy day but it was much calmer there than anywhere else.

Grounds are great to walk around as it's in the middle of the countryside. The garden is lovely to walk around as is the house and riverside walk. One of my favourite national trust places to visit!

This national trust site is absolutely beautiful. Despite a small amount of rain we had an absolutely wonderful day. The cafe also served delicious food and tasty cakes ???? Lovely woodland to walk around and nice gardens. Picnic tables where we enjoyed playing a few travel games and lots of families that looked like they were having fun ???? Recommended!

Great place to explore with the kids, river side walks, meadows to run through, trees to climb, lawns for picnics and plenty of horticultural delights - but mainly great ice cream ????

Considering we visited on a wet day, when you can't go in the house, in the middle.of winter, the gardens and grounds still offer some beautiful structure. This will be a great place to visit in every season to see the changes and beauty of the landscape.

Sadly I didn't see it at it's best what with the current lockdown rules and it was raining to boot. However, the gardens were lovely and the staff all very polite and efficient. One word of warning, as with most on-site cafes in open houses, the prices are top dollar though to be fair the food was also top quality. We will be going back on a sunny day soon but may well take a picnic to have in the car!!

Lovely house set in some very picturesque grounds. We are regular visitors as members of the national Trust and all year round we love going. High summer is of course the best with all the roses in bloom in the walled garden, and it is of course busiest them. But I would recommend this place to everyone as a great place for a walk or to take kids for a run-around.

The river running through the grounds and the lovely fresh water spring give this NT property something special. There was a very good guided tour of the grounds at 11.00am which gave you a brief history of this place. The most special part of the grounds is the superb walled rose garden created by Graham Thomas in the 1970's saving many rare blooms from extinction. The house has some lovely rooms, but none better than the one designed by the artist Whistler, a must see. The stories about the lady of the house "Maud Russell" are intriguing, particularly her alleged affairs including Ian Fleming. Easy to spend a full day here.

In this world of COVID-19 restrictions, I used the lawn in front of Mottisfont Abbey as a venue to meet with my team, face-to-face for the first time in 6 months. The sun was out and it was beautifully peaceful. Not everything is open, but we did the river walk and had a picnic - very pleasant and helpful staff and a stunning location. I will be back with my family when all the madness dies down. Thanks for a pleasant morning.

Arrived with rain threatening and the first chills of Autumn blowing through our bones but we were prepared and arrived equipped with winter jackets and so pleased that we made the choice not to cancel our visit. Not have visited for several years we had completely forgotten the sheer size of the grounds. The house was of course not open but the restaurant was welcoming and provided a delicious hot meal before setting off on our walk. We had remembered the river walk , walking one of the clearest waters ever seen and the surprise of seeing so many large trout gathered together, totally amazing. We made our leaf boats as instructed and launched them down stream. We followed them at marching pace to keep up! Then we went to the formal gardens obviously past their summer best but that did not matter; it was obvious that there had been a most splendid colour display and that the gardens were well tended. The trees are huge! I have never seen such a magnificent collection of what seemed the best specimens ever. Definitely a place of awe and wonder. Lots of parking, a lovely shop and excellent service in the restaurant.Thank you Mottisfont.

What an amazing place to visit, especially now in the autumn. The river Test looks crystal clear in contrast with the autumn leaves. Deer, cattle and fish can be spotted along the way. Fresh open air and no noise pollution - due to its remote location. It gives some respite from what is currently going on in the world. With several picnic spots, tables, large open grounds and gardens, you can't help but have a good Sunday stroll. Fresh coffee and sausage rolls from the kitchen are an added bonus. The staff are very friendly, dogs are permitted and it's very accessible for people with disabilities.

Mottisfont is currently sparkling with its Christmas theme. The house tells a story of 'The Night Before Christmas' and it is filled with Christmas trees and lights. There are some beautiful ornaments and walls. There are even deliberate holes in the walls so you can see the original structure underneath. The house is beautifully decorated and absolutely great for families, whilst not ruining any of the history behind Mottisfont. Many grounds and things to see, would 100% recommend. Cafe, shops and facilities are all great.

Had pleasant walk around the estate and along river. Worth a visit even without going into the home. Minor moan is the coffee was disappointingly bland for us.

Really nice place to visit. Great walks, especially by the river, interesting house, and well worth a visit especially if you have outdoor children. A bit expensive if you haven't got national trust card. Not so much to do and see in autumn/winter but still great walks and views.

Currently you can book a timed entry via the property website, with new times being released weekly on a friday/saturday. There is a one way system round most of the area as the footpaths can be narrow (turn right first rather than go over the small stream bridge for best route). Toilets are open. Cafe is open for takeaway, plenty of benches dotted around site to eat/drink on. Make sure you take your litter home with you (no bins). Daffodils at this time of year lovely. Walled garden holding the collection of various plants closed at this time.

The contemporary visitor facilities by Burd Haward Architects is a great way to enter into the grounds of Mottisfont. In general the house has amazing surrounding landscape including a very beautiful walled garden where our kids particularly enjoyed a game of ‘hide and seek’. There’s also a good selection of cafes. We enjoyed a cream tea from the kiosk in the walled garden.
