Bestest hospital ever for child birth and child care in North West I must say. Had best experience as first time mom. Highly recommended. Very friendly, cooperative and professional stuff. ???? I would give them more than 5☆☆☆☆☆ if possible.

Saint Mary's Hospital is a hospital in Manchester, England. It is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Founded in 1790, St Mary's provides a range of inter-related services specifically for women and children. The hospital was founded in 1790 by Dr Charles White in a house in Old Bridge Street, Salford, as the "Lying-in Charity". Five years later in 1795 the charity became the Manchester Lying-in Hospital; it was accommodated however in the Bath Inn, Stanley Street, Salford.[1] Midwifery training for women was provided from the beginning. The building was felt to be very suitable. The bar was used as the apothecary's shop. Inpatient accommodation was available for widows, deserted wives, and those whose homes were unsuitable. 80 were admitted in 1791/92. In 1799/1800 there were 177 and 800 home patients. The charity maintained a list of midwives, who were paid two shillings and sixpence for each delivery. In 1819 it moved to smaller premises at 18 King Street Manchester, but moved back to Stanley Street in 1822. A new hospital was constructed on Hathersage Road between 1966 and 1970 at a cost of over £3 million. The wards were housed in a tower block with laboratories and the antenatal clinic in a podium. Each ward had 4 four-bedded rooms with nine single rooms, three nurseries, each with six cots, a day room and a utility room. Regional facilities – a special care baby unit, the medical genetics centre and In-Vitro Fertilisation services were developed.[7] In 2009 paediatric (excluding neonatal) services from St Mary's Hospital were transferred to the newly re-built Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, which opened on 11 June 2009.

Came in to triage yesterday at 10 and was admitted at 3 Last set of obs done in the triage department at 14:30 Admitted to the ward around 18:00 No obs done at all still at time of writing. Might as well have stayed at home. Didn't once check the baby or the mothers vitals. No communication as to what's going on and an all round dreadful experience

NHS it is not any more what it uses to be. Many times quality of care is poor because of some nurses which are coming to work only to pass the time.... then having facilities such as ones in the picture: baby changing toilet without support for baby... or toilet with one sink but two soap dispensers. There is no use of sense at all.

Required gynaecology treatment under general anaesthetic as a day case and stayed on ward 62. Every member of staff involved in my care treated me with kindness. The two healthcare assistants deserve a special mention. Nothing was too much trouble. They were charming. My nurse was also amazing. Also, top marks for the registrar gynaecologist (with the fab glasses), anaesthetist and ODP. The were easy to liaise with, totally lovely and approachable. I felt in safe hands and was delighted with my stay. My consultant was great too. He is really patient and very sincere and thoughtful. He treats me like a whole person with condition that effects my life and I know that he wants to help me feel better. I have never once felt like just a medical problem that needs sorting and turfing out. This is what healthcare should look like. My stay was perfect. Thank you everyone x

I will start by saying everything prenatally was wonderful & I cannot fault any members of the staff that I saw during my pregnancy. However after having a 35 hour induced labor which resulted in failed forceps and an emergency c section (my baby left with forehead scar) everything went down hill. During the pregnancy I was seen by a mental health midwife for anxiety and she arranged a private room on the postnatal ward. However when I got to the postnatal ward, the way I was treated in regards to my mental health was nothing short of disgusting. I have an autoimmune disease & arthritis that means it takes much longer for me to recover from things such as C sections. This coupled with the 3 days of no sleep prior to my babies birth meant that I needed additional rest. However instead of recieving compassion & well informed care from the staff, I was greeted with suspicion, judgement & bullying. Because my records had a mental health issue (anxiety) written on it, the staff decided to be over observant in regards to my mental health state. They would come into my room every 30 minutes which meant I didn't receive the desperately needed sleep I required. They didn't remove a very large empty cannula from the crook of my arm for 3 days which interfered with my efforts to care for my baby. After a student mental health nurse came into my room to ask how I was feeling on day 3, I got a little emotional & explained that the lack of sleep was getting to me. I said "I felt like I couldn't do it anymore last night" in regards to caring for my baby because of the surgery wound. The nurse took this comment as suicidal, placed me on a section 5 2 without my knowledge & arranged for a member of staff to be in my room with me 24/7. It would be the same member of staff for 12 hours and then another member for the next 12 hours. This was very uncomfortable for me as I was originally given a private room for exactly that, privacy! It compromised my ability to breastfeed my baby. On day 4 without my knowledge or notice 4 psychiatrists came into my room to tell me I was being sectioned & taken to a mother and baby unit. The reasons cited were no bond with baby, emotional & suicidal ideation. I told them non of this was accurate or correct but they would not listen. They also referred me to social services. The no bond was written because the night shift staff in my room would offer to care for my baby whilst I slept. However behind my back they would then write down that "nurses are taking full care of baby". They made me feel guilty for simply taking longer to recover because of my compromised immune system. On day 5 they sent me to the mother and baby unit. Within 5 minutes of the doctors seeing me on the Monday they sent me home and said it was completely inappropriate that I was sent there & that there was nothing wrong with my mental health. Social services also agreed that I shouldn't have been referred to them. The staff destroyed my life for 2 months postpartum with their mistakes. I have submitted a formal complaint against both the hospital and the mental heath trust. I have been left under a microscope now because of their lack of communication & common sense. The mother and baby unit were compassionate and saw things from my point of view and let me go home. This clearly shows how wrong St Mary's judgement was for sending my there in the first place. Social services also apologized and told me no further action was required. I can't believe St Mary's believe it's acceptable to waste precious resources and make a mockery of mental health. Especially during a pandemic. They not only were looking for things in my behaviour that didn't exist, they also ignored me & deprived me of my rights. Never mention anything about your mental health if you are at this hospital. They will bully you. I still suffer from PTSD about this experience and it will haunt me forever. It is soul destroying to be made to feel this way. I will never forgive or forget what happened to me at this awful place & I will make sure my story of injustice is heard.

The care in the hospital was absolutely fantastic. I cannot complain about the staffs bedside manner or care to patients. Brilliant surgical team. Thank you Mr Pickersgill. The only complaint I have is during a pandemic I saw many staff, mainly students not wearing protective masks correctly. Many had their noses out or it on their chin. I found this insensitive considering the current climate and something that the hospital should address with its workers.

Had my son here in April. Came in for an induction on the 2nd, waters went 6pm. Was left for over 24 hrs with my waters going waiting to go to the delivery ward. This then led to sepsis for both me and my son and my son was transferred to nicu for 9 days and I was in hospital for 4 days after delivery. I had a student and a qualified midwife and both were brilliant. A consultant did come to me on the post natal ward and did apologise as he said it could’ve been prevented. NICU staff were amazing though, they did everything they could to help him get better. Post natal care was fine but I could really tell the midwives wanted to discharge me ASAP, being on a post natal ward without a baby is bad enough but coming back from nicu to find discharge notes on the bed for 3 days straight to then be told I’m not being discharged yet is just strange and very uncomfortable. Felt like I was taking up space. Other then that the midwives were lovely, very helpful and don’t doubt you which is great especially when you think somethings up. Considering it’s a hospital I think writing a review is weird but I do remember reading them when I was pregnant and there’s a fair few negative ones but it does entirely depend on your case and who you get. It is a very busy hospital and is under a lot of pressure so I do understand sometimes things do slip but that could’ve ended badly.

I gave birth here on weekend the midwives were extremely supportive and reasuring throughout my labour. They gave me alot of advice as it was my first. They watched over and cuddled my baby as I was in the shower so I didn't feel like I needed to rush. Constantly cleaning always made sure I had clean pads on the bed during labour. After care was just as good. Thank you to all of the midwives

Brilliant service at emergency geno . I just recently had a delayed late miscarriage and the staff have been at my beckon call anytime I needed them. They are wonderful and have time for you always. They also made sure my friend was comfy too. 100% recommended to anyone who is expecting or sadly going through something as myself.

Parking quite a walk away from the hospital so it's worthwhile getting dropped off in the allocated drop off zone's. Really easy to navigate plus there's a reception desk should you need signposting. I went to the scan department which was a straight walk ahead from the entrance. Layout was spacious with it's own reception desk inwhich you report to. Really pleasant waiting room, the staff are very friendly and helpful and keep you informed at all times. I Highly recommend.

This is honestly the worst hospital that I have ever attended. I am a consultant led patient. There is a complete lack of communication between departments; lack of care and attention to detail and a failure to observe the duty of candour from all levels of staff from administration staff right up to consultants. You will wait for up to 8 hours for appointments with a lack of communication to tell you so. Once you attend the appointment, the consultants might not bother to explain growth scans etc and leave you in the dark. Some consultants will not follow guidelines and you will have risky procedures for no benefit (such as amniocentesis). You will be told that you will receive a call at a certain time and this will not happen. You will call several hospital departments just to have to leave a voicemail and never get through. You will receive letters with incorrect dates and times on them. Try sorting all of this out with a full time job! I’ve had to be signed off work just to deal with the sheer incompetence and substandard care from the medical professionals at this hospital. If I could deliver my baby myself, I would do so. I’m still convinced that I might be able to do a better job from what I’ve experienced so far. You won’t get anywhere with PALS so I would suggest writing down the names / numbers of doctors and nurses and taking any issues to the PHSO and the relevant regulatory bodies. I have lost all faith and trust in this hospital.

I unfortunately had a miscarriage at this hospital, I was suffering from extremely large blood clots and we were getting stupid comments like I've never seen clots this big etc, but ho home as you will be okay, got home and in less than 2 hours I was at hope hospital being rushed into theatre as I was having a hemorrhage and they needed to get me into theatre asap which I was within 30 minutes. What a disgrace this ace actually is.

Amazing hospital, went into labour early, was having a section 3 hours later, then rushed down for a 2nd op, no hesitation, every ward, every midwife and doctor were amazing, i dont understand people complaining, its the main womens hospital in the area and for an underfunded NHS they deserve 10 stars, just a wonderful experience start to finish! They saved me and my baby despite the place being full to busting. Have respect for this place.

I gave birth to my 1st child here and the staff on the induction ward to the delivery unit were absolutely amazing. They delivered my baby safely and they were on the ball. The care on the postnatal ward, ward 47b wasn’t that great. They didn’t check on you or the baby and they took ages to come to you if you rang the buzzer. Some of the midwives on this ward seemed like they couldn’t be bothered.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER: if i could put 0 star i would. During my 1st pregnancy in 2017, the treatment was bad enough i did not have my baby there. now i am pregnant again, i had to call Ambulance being very sick at 25 weeks, at the ward 26, not only they left me for 1hr after the ambulance has left to check me , they did not offer me a bed, i was waiting there on the couch with 39 temperature and constant bile vomiting, after 2.5hrs wait, all they did was to check that all is well with the baby and i can go home. They literally didn't offer me no paracetamol, no anti sickness whatsoever, they sent me home with high temperature and constant vomiting, NO ONES THERE CARED AT ALL, NOBODY, i was frustrated and so angry cos at Wythenshawe Hospital i would have never had this treatment. even while living the floor on my own, i found myself vomiting so badly downstairs that people had to attend to me and tried to call the ward again, but no response. i just thought to myself, lemme just got home if I die I die, St Mary Staff at the maternity Unit are WORST PEOPLE i have met my entire life. Even while living in London for 8 years with crowded hospital, treatments were always better than this. This was the last time i would set my foot in that maternity unit. I rather have my baby at home. II DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOSPITAL EVER EVER

It's take too long to see doctor or nurse,on 17th of November 2019 I came with my wife because she had early pregnancy and we faced very poor services and lack of support, she felt a bit tired and then she aborted her baby, I am feeling unsatisfied from the service I received. All department has lack of staff and they are unfriendly too. In my opinion these are not nurses or doctors just like machnicals in their behaviour. Need more development in my recommendations. Thank you

We couldnt have asked for better care for me and my new baby. Nothing was too much trouble for the incredible staff at this hospital. There was plenty of staff to accommodate the amount of ladies on the wards. Every single midwife/nurse/doctor we encountered was friendly, caring, knowledgeable and understanding. They do an incredible job at making sure you and baby have all your needs cared for what ever the time of day or night. I really can not thank the staff of st Mary's for making such an incredible milestone in our life so lovely.

I had my little girl here in October after going into labour 4 weeks early. The care I received was fantastic! The midwives were lovely, the place was clean and I got a huge support when it came to breastfeeding. I wish I could remember the name of the nurse who was on my ward in recovery, she was so kind and human with me! She came in all the way through the night and helped me with my baby, it wouldn't think twice about having my baby here again.

I went through a high risk pregnancy with St. Mary's and had a wonderful experience. I had an emergency c-section and the entire staff was incredibly supportive during the procedure. The nurses held baby close to me once born and were so encouraging when I was breastfeeding during recovery. I felt they went above and beyond to allow me to bond with my son. People often complain about wait times and yes, I saw this issue when giving birth. This is because the hospital is good at what they do, so understandably, they are often very busy with people around the region flocking to use their services. I have found the staff tries their best with the massive workload they seem to always have.

After a long and traumatic experience of childbirth elsewhere, we entered the last stage of pregnancy with some trepidation. Come the day, we arrived at St Mary's at around 3am, quickly checked in to the Midwifery Led Unit (Ward 47), and given a clean, well equipped and comfortable room. A few hours later, we were holding a happy and healthy baby boy, birthed in a pool. I can't speak highly enough for the friendly, professional and caring staff that cared for us, and the 100% positive experience we had in our time there. Amazing. Thank you x

Last Monday evening I went into triage with severe itching, I was there all night and tested for obstetric cholestasis. Got a call at 10am asking me to come in because my bile salts were high, which means I tested positive for obstetric cholestasis and I was 37 weeks at the time. The midwife said that I would be induced at 38 weeks which was on the Thursday (2 days from then). They said I would be called on either Thursday or Friday asking me to come in to be induced, I received no call so called on Thursday and Friday and was told I’m 17th on the waiting list! Waited til Sunday and called again and then was told I’m 28th on the list? Had a bit of a strong word with them as it’s unfair that I’ve put my life on hold waiting for a phone call and that my babies health is at risk and they aren’t taking it seriously. I’m aware there are other women who have conditions as well but that doesn’t mean it’s fair to push me to the end when being told I’d be induced sooner. Got a call yesterday evening saying they’re most likely going to call me in today (Monday- almost a week after the diagnosis). So again waited til 1pm to call and called in, told that it’s highly unlikely I’ll be called in today! Very unprofessional and being told so many different things by different people and would think as my pregnancy is now high risk I would be treated with more care but honestly I feel like I have been let down and feel very upset that me and my baby aren’t receiving the care we deserve. Switching hospitals to wythenshawe now as I don’t think st marys will ever induce me.

Only giving one star as can't review without it. If you're going to have a baby, stay clear of this hospital... i gave birth there in 2016 and it is only due to sheer luck that my baby or me haven't died due to incompetent staff. my pregnancy was normal but monitored as I had 5+ scans due to my previous child being born small in size. I have insisted on epidural. two days before my due date I have started having contraction pains, went back and forth there till they done another scan and said I have polyhydromnia( too much waters) which can be dangerous to both baby and mother, but NO ONE noticed it previously and even after noticing it, they have sent me home in pain. My delivery was out of a horror movie, I started proper contractions at 4pm, arrived in hospital for 11 pm only to be told there will be NO EPIDURAL because the anesthetist is UNAVAILABLE due to emergency. Ive been given intravenous pain relief instead which made my baby sleepy and the birth slowed down and almost stopped... They coulndt break the waters as they said with polyhydromnia there has to be doctor present in case the cord wraps itself around baby when waters are broken. Guess what, NO DOCTOR was available!! Doctor arrived at 7 am with anesthetist and have performed epidural, but by that point baby's blood pressure was super low and I was too weak to push. They made me push for several hours with lots of students and doctors coming and going, even tho i insisted on NO STUDENTS. They all stood around me and watched while I was barely conscious, very upset about not being able to push and crying...i felt like a circus freak...Around 3 pm they took me to the theatre with a caesarian in mind as baby was in danger. they made me sign an agreement to Caesarian even tho i was barely conscious on operating table, after 23 hours of labour, i didn't even know what I was signing! In the end they had to use vacuum and forceps which left my baby's face bruised and with a cone bump on his head. My baby had hypertension in muscles from birth, coulndt open his eye properly for a few months and later had physiotherapy and his physical development is slow to this day. All because the maternity is short staffed and they don't act appropriately in timely manner to help you deliver your baby in a humane way. Not to mention there is no support or help for mothers who want to breasfeed. Steer clear of this place, it shouldn't even be called a maternity hospital...
