An authentic British restaurant, with an unmistakable style. The main theme of the menu is fish and chips that it s very very good , and also starters and main course of fish , but there are also some choice with meat . Anyway the food is nice and very tasty. The restaurant it s not very big but the space it s enough for enjoy with pleasure the meal and the staff is kind and always present.

As tourists, we were after some great fish and chips and this place did not disappoint! The portions were large and fresh and dining in was such fun with classic tunes to groove to. I felt like a local for a few minutes! (Smile)

Consistently good traditional fish & chips, thick fillets of fish, (I opt for haddock, delicious!), and proper thick chips. Great service too.

What an amazing place to have the classic English dish of Fish and Chips. The restaurant design is old school yet fresh and funky, the food is just what I needed. The traditional cod was cooked with just the right amount of crispiness on the outside and tenderness on the inside. The chips played their role very well providing the needed balance of flavours. No visit to Poppies is ever complete without trying their famous homemade mushy peas, every spoonful was delightful. For desert I went with another classic - sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. The hot pudding and cold ice cream complimented each other very well. All of this was washed down with a bottle of great Camden Brewery pale ale. I definitely recommend a visit to Poppies if you are in or near Spitalfields. It is nostalgic meal in the middle of a modern food district and just makes you feel as though you are having a classic English experience. Highly recommended for anyone.

Calamari and chips for me. Was a good sized box - and definitely worth the 45 minute walk to find it!

Fun fish and chips shop with a quirky diner setting. Tastes good but expensive for sure. Great choice if you're trying fish n chips for first time or want a sit down dinner. Nice staff !

Poppies is rated as one of the best fish n' chips places in London. Having eaten here, I can't understand what makes this place rated so high. While definitely, not bad, the meal wasn't great either. You are presented with three options for fish, and I went with the cod. It comes with one piece of fish and some chips (fries) on the side. Pretty standard haha. The fish was pretty good, lightly battered and the actual meat was cooked well and not overly well done. However, it was pretty bland and could use a bit extra sauce. As a result, this resulted in me having to ask for me second, third, and fourth serving of tartar sauce. The chips were pretty bland and soft. Maybe it was just too late in the night, but I was thoroughly disappointed with them. Service was great. The waiters / waitresses were attentive and explained the menu well. Overall, it was a very fun environment and while the food was disappointing given the hype, it was a decent meal in general.

Not sure why everyone raves about poppies, in my opinion the chips have gone down hill. Fish quite dry. Big portions though, friendly service and good curry sauce. Pretty expensive, our meal ended up being £45 (with one beer and one coffee) for two people.

This is a very nice place for fish and chips. I ordered Cod Fish and chips and Calamari Ring. The fried Cod is fresh, firm and juicy. The battered is crisp but the fish is still juicy. Sprinkle some pepper and salt, the taste is just heavenly. For the Calamari Ring, nothing too interesting, but it is definitely fresh. Will definitely recommend this place if you would like to try fish and chips in London.

Really not what it’s cracked up to be, the 5 stars must be from tourists who aren’t familiar with fish and chips. Oily, bland and ridiculously overpriced. The decor was nice though hence the 2 stars.

If you're in the neighbourhood this is THE place for fish & chips...I took my Sikh boyfriend here once & he loved it...fish is fresh & the service is friendly & speedy. This area's full of history...Jack the Ripper murdered one of his victims in this very street (Hanbury Street) & Simeon Solomon (Artist) was born near here in 1840...

Superb fish and chips restaurant in East London. It has been in this location for nearly 70 years and the huge amount of objects on display is testament to this. We ordered the classic cod and the hot fish plate consisting of cod bites, scampi, white bait and calamari. The quality of all the fish was high and the chips were just right. The staff were fantastic and came across as proud to be working in an East London institution. Highly recommended

My friend and I really wanted to eat here but we were super short on time. The staff was so wonderful, gracious and accommodating even though we were very annoying customers. The food was absolutely delicious! I will be returning here the next time I'm in London. Cannot recommend enough.

My friend wanted to come so I accompanied him. It was empty when we arrived. Maybe our waitress was upset only one of us ordered food...? I got a sparkling water. The waitress that served us was beyond rude, it was unnecessary to make faces at us when we said only one of us was eating. I asked for some extra ketchup and she practically threw the ketchup at us, she had already turned around by the time I said thank you. I would rate it 1 star but my friend said the fish and chips were good.

If you're slightly anxious about clean establishments these days, pick Poppies. All the staff are wearing masks or visors. They cleaned the table just before placing us. We got our cutlery handed to us in an individual paper pouch, and we never felt at risk or anything.. The food was excellent. Haddock and fish cakes for us, and everything tasted just right. Fries that make you feel at home. There is in unmatched level of effort and service quality there. Will go back and will recommend it to friends and family.

Great fluffy, crispy-shelled chips, great atmosphere inside and outside the shop, nestled in a brilliant spot in East London's graffiti covered street. The only bad things were the high prices and fish. I personally didn't completely enjoy the fish( I felt it was a bit soft) but that's just my opinion at the end of the day. My other issue was the high prices of the food(£ 10.40 for a regular fish and chips £12.40 for a large) but but, if you have deep pockets and a hankering for fish and chips this may suit you. Overall I would strongly recommend this for anyone looking for a cultured fish shop in the area.

This is a fun historical institution that serves up delicious chips alongside fresh fish. Portions are matching to the price and the service is superb. Only thing is that for all the hype about Poppies, I really wasn’t too impressed by the fish. It was good, not great and not even in the proximity of it. Everything else was stellar but if the star of the show doesn’t blow it out of the water, I can’t really give full ratings. Perhaps it speaks to an age where better Fish and Chips exist in the market.

Better than expected! We've ordered both fishs, cod and haddock, and they were crispy, and soft inside. The chips were just ok cause they aren't crunchy enough. The waiter was helpful as he recommended the chicken pie and mushy bean and they were deliciously good! Totally recommend this place and would like to visit again if I had the chance.

Serious tourist trap to be honest. Everything is overpriced (and branded?). Maybe it’s a personal thing but the decor is just a bit corny. Should’ve gone to a regular chippy I guess.

One of the well known fish and chips restaurants in London. Generous serving size even regular. The fish is fresh with nice crispy crust outside. The decoration is the 60's 70's style. Nice friendly staffs.

Very very good fish and chips, even tho it isn’t higher than the average fish and chips in London. Love their branded packaging. Also, the smaller portion of fish and chips is still pretty big! Good prices

Horrible fish and chips, it had probably been fried 3-4 times before serving. The manager still claimed that they ‘usually serves the fish newly cooked ‘. I couldn’t even eat more than two bites. No compensation was offered. At least the salad was fresh. The staff was quick.

The food was good but very overpriced for what it was. Each dish comes with a tiny tiny jar (read: one tablespoon's worth) of ketchup and tartar sauce and they charge extra for any additional jars. Not really worth the £40 for a quick fish and chips.

Superb place for fish and chips ,quite pricey (about 13£ ) but servings was huge. Downside is they just give you a teeny bottle of tartare sauce and ketchup which was not enough for the fish and chips. Ordered cod but they said they ran out and got haddock instead. Adequate space for dining.clean surroundings,. Fish was fried perfectly.the chips needed to be more crisp outside.

Best Fish & Chips in London. Lots of places serve it, especially in the touristy areas. But make the walk and have it at the best. One of the top 5 in the world.

I always enjoy popping into Poppies in Spitalfields. I order the Vegetable Pasty with Chips and a side of Mushy Peas. Everything tastes fresh and fabulous. The interiors are retro and the atmosphere is friendly. It's a brilliant place to take visitors to London who want to try fish and chips. If it is crowded you can get take-away. They also have a stand over the road at Old Spitalfields Market.

If your main concern when eating fish and chips is the restaurants branding and décor then Poppies may come close to the top of the list. However you'll pay for the privilege, and your portion will be small and distinctly average, or worse. If you want mushy peas, these will set you back over £3 if you eat in. My fish had distinct notes of burnt oil about it and was small enough to be considered a child's portion in most fish & chip shops. It was however fresh, and well presented. Depends what you want really.

It is a family own and operated little restaurant. It was quite busy and they kept on top of all the tables, making sure everyone was been serve. Food was good and big servings. Some employees are better that others, but if in London what to satisfy the Fish and Chips craving, you should come and visit them.

Went to Poppies a few times already, my wife absolutely loves it and how not to agree. We like the decor, the fish is fresh for real, even if you go for the classic fried cod it doesn't feel oily nor heavy. Everything is complimented by excellent service, all the emplyers are polite and will give you top treatment, they want to make you happy and just enjoy your meal. Poppies is the first place that comes to my mind when considering fish for dinner! Prices as not the cheapest, expect to pay around £16 for a large fish and chips, but it's definitely worth every penny!

This restaurant was the most fun and had the best fish and chips we've had on a 5 day trip to London. The host, Laurent, is one of the funniest, charasmatic and most kind person I've ever met in de restaurant business. The plates are big and well priced. The quality of the fish is outstanding and they have their own lovely beer to go with the fish. easiest 5/5 I've given

Being a huge fan of fish and chips, I heard a lot of Poppies and its history and always want to try, however their price kinda stopped me. So went this week on Wednesday into their Spitalfields branch since it's EOTHO month so would be affordable for me. Wow, so impressed by their clean and souvenir contained shop, it would really give you a ship sailing kind of feeling or ambience. Customer service was amazing; Charlie and Roman were so chatty and welcoming. Charlie recommended me Haddock and chips and he even shared a little secret about how to make mushy peas taste more delightful by adding a bit of Vinegar, salt and pepper. (Sorry Charlie, could not keep your secret) You must go with an empty tummy. The size was huge. The fish taste fresh and crispy. I was almost drooling, got even tired of eating but was still hungry. Hatss off to the food and service

It was really busy but we didn't wait long. Service was friendly and it felt like we went back in the past, the atmosphere was really nice. Food was also good and probably the best fish and chips I've ever had in London. I could actually feel that the fish was fresh. We all ordered a regular size cod fish and chips which was really big.

Very crowded. Nicely furnished (50s style, even with an original Wurlitzer). Service good. Food is quite ok, but for me a bit too flavourless.
