It was absolutely wonderful. I joined the Grand Tour of the gallery and a very knowledgeable lady took us round various artwork and explained the artist and picture. I really enjoyed it and recommend others to take the tour which is free. Loved the tour

You really can't go wrong with the art you will see for free (suggested donation £3) - some beautiful paintings you will recognise and very interesting ones that aren't as well known. Friendly staff and useful descriptions by each piece that will get you thinking more about what you're looking at.

The gallery has a great collection of paintings. We went to the gallery during a recent visit to Manchester and were really impressed. In addition to the permanent collection, there was also a temporary exhibition of weaving and sculpture.

To be honest, I did not think much of the place as I thought it was to small... Wait take a look as it will surprise you. I had really good time eventhough the cafe was closed due to coronavirus.. Strongly recommend..

Manchester Art Gallery, formerly Manchester City Art Gallery, is a publicly owned art museum on Mosley Street in Manchester city centre. The main gallery premises were built for a learned society in 1823 and today its collection occupies three connected buildings, two of which were designed by Sir Charles Barry. Both Barry's buildings are listed. The building that links them was designed by Hopkins Architects following an architectural design competition managed by RIBA Competitions. It opened in 2002 following a major renovation and expansion project undertaken by the art gallery.

This must be one of the nicest galleries I have visited in Manchester, an excellent spot with shops all nearby serving good food, fresh and hot drinks. Also, the art is magnificent, I would most definitely come back again!

Overall for a cheap way to kill a few hours this was fine, however for our personal tastes the curated galleries lacked a bit of variety. I'm sure if you're passionate about art you would find a lot of enjoyment from the various exhibits, however personally there was a lack of diversity in style and a lot of the same style (to my untrained eye!). Endless portraits of figures I've never heard of in the same way meant a lot of the exhibits are lost on me. The latest sculpture section was the most enjoyable part, with some more contemporary pieces that I enjoy.

The building its self is beautiful with the way the older building has been extended. The artwork inside is a great collection with a few of my favorites below! There were free guided tours and helpful staff dotted about just wish the place was a bit bigger!!!

It was a good visit for me. Even though I am not an art person. A number of great works on display. Comfortable setting to enjoy the pieces. Not to be missed. Entry is free. Donations appreciated.

A must visit place if you are exploring Manchester ! This place has some exclusive art works which are a treat to watch and observe. From modern art to the mediaeval paintings and sculptures, you have it all. Do checkout the Romans painting on the 2nd floor which is just epic. The best part about this art gallery is that it is free to visit with no entry charge. Well you can always give some donations if you want which is used for maintenance of the gallery.

Such a lovely display. Good portrayal of Modern, contemporary and traditional art. Most definitely work a visit. Can be quite busy at weekends and they close quite early so make sure you time it well. Quite central also so easy to get to by bus or tram, closest tram in St. Peter’s square. Piccadilly station is a 10 min walk away. Enjoy

Always a great place to visit. Even with COVID limitations there is a lot to see. The gift shop is open, but cafe is closed. The feminist display is quite interesting

The workshop was so inspiring and fully demonstrated the value of a broad , compassionate community that can exchange and share values, beliefs, knowledge. In the current times we are experiencing at home and overseas it so heartwarming to feel we still have a wholehearted connection with everyone,if we try ,listen and be curious we can learn so much from one another. The staff and volunteers need a mention too, they are all amazing and no question or request is to much.Thank you for experience.

Lovely gallery and friendly staff. Loved the feminist revisions and the obvious commitment to social justice. Such a shame the viability of the cafe has been affected by CV-19 at the moment.

Stunning historical building- the main gallery premises were built for a learned society in 1823 and today its collection occupies three connected buildings, two of which were designed by Sir Charles Barry. Both Barry's buildings are listed. It’s free to enter. Fantastic collection of arch and lovely quirky cafe offering very tasty freshly made food- there hot pot is lovely.

Fantastic art. I could sit there for hours looking at the art, but unfortunately was in a rush when I visited. The gift shop has a lot of fantastic things to buy, and the smell of the cafe was so nice as I walked by.

Some nice works of art are available here. I found the modern art section to be lacking in some ways but the overall experience for my visit was good. Admission is free along with informative printed maps and there are regular free tours at certain times of the day. Facilities are available as well as a restaurant and shop. I recommend grabbing some Manchester Park Ale which is only available to buy at the gallery. It is made locally using honey and has quite a unique taste.

AMAZING art gallery. So well thought-out & planned. I can't believe I haven't visited before now! It's great to see self aware exhibitions, with notes on how they are biased or from certain narrow perspectives. It's definitely the most beautiful gallery I've been to, with gorgeous paint colours and even a little shop. You could spend hours here.

Apart from the main entrance door which is so hard to open there's nothing I complain about. It's a lovely place, always full of people and great artwork!

Visited 2 times in 2018, beautiful building and a cosy gallery space inside. 1,5 - 2 hours needed to properly enjoy the art. Will aim to visit again on my next trip to Manchester. My favourite part was all the Wedgwood they had, loved it!

New, interesting and exciting exhibitions all the time. Perfect for some time alone or a date or just family time. Really they is something for everyone. Cafe and shop are brilliant too. And everyone who works here including the volunteers are absolutely wonderful. Me and my 2 year old really enjoyed our time.

You could easily spend the entire day there! The Lowry collection is wonderful, arguably the centrepiece of the gallery for me. There's a really mixed selection of subjects so there's something that would appeal to everyone. The kids fun room was a hit, it broke the afternoon up for my mini one. Accessible and clean toilets, as well as a lovely little cafe, it really is a great place to spend a few hours!

The gallery has set up Covid safe operations very well with a free booking system to limit numbers and a one way system through the galleries. They have retained all the classics I love and the explanation panels are very helpful at explaining the stories behind each piece.

Close to a tram stop and many restaurants. A good collection of classical art. Nicely presented in opulent rooms. A great onsite café. Like most museums and galleries entrance is free, although donations are asked for via a collection box. Accessible for wheelchair users with two glass elevators. A great way to avoid the rain

A great gallery, has a lot of amazing art but if your not artistically smart, you might not be able to appreciate the best pieces like "A piece of A4 paper crumpled into a ball".

Arrived in time for the guided highlights talk at 2pm on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Richard was a great guide, showing us a time line that used his knowledge and entertaining narrative very well. As he mentioned, each volunteer gives a different tour depending on their interests, so will be back! Beautiful buildings and these were also covered in the tour. Recommend the gallery as a whole, but to get a bit more background, stay for the tour. Highly recommended.

The Art Gallery is a wonderful open space and the new extension blends perfectly with the old. My one gripe has always been the lighting. I love that I can get up close and see the brush strokes on so many paintings but in the red Galleries, 8 and 5 (I think it is) the lighting is so harsh that it obscures the view. You have to stand right back and/or to the side for a clear view of Hylas and the Nymphs and Rossetti's Assarte in particular. And The Birth of Pandora is worse. There is a brilliant interactive display beneath with the faces of each God on little doors to lift so you can look up and identify the faces in the painting, yet when you look up most are obliterated by the lights. I couldn't find Poseidon til I moved right away. It's really frustrating. Please angle them away so we can enjoy them wherever we are stood.

I visited to see the Leonardo Da Vinci Drawings. An impressive collection of other Art. Compact and easy to get around quickly. Free entry (£3 recommended by gallery as a gesture)
