In 2013 I left a valuable Birkin bag, worth £3,000, with Ian Townley to sell in his shop. I took no receipt for it as he had sold much of my late mother's jewellery for me in the past and our business was conducted with a smile and a handshake. He paid me in cash for everything he sold and I was a happy customer. He explained that he did not sell bags himself but he had a colleague who did and he would pass it onto her. As I had various items for sale in his shop for years that were taking some time to sell I didn’t question it too much as the months went on and I heard nothing from him. After a year or so I called him to ask if his colleague was having any luck with the bag. He said she was away for a few months but he would get in touch with her. He refused to give me her details so alarm bells began to ring. I called again and he said she was in Marbella but he would track her down when she returned. By now I was getting worried so I pinned him down on the phone where to my horror he became abusive, insisted he had no knowledge of the bag, that he had never received it in the first place! In a later email he contradicted himself, saying an assistant told him I had gone into the shop and he had given me the bag. Nobody can just go into his shop and remove items without a receipt so this was a lie. So he was contradicting himself; on one hand he was denying ever receiving it and the next saying I had removed it. Although he did not give me a receipt I do have emails from him and am considering taking legal action as the bag was so valuable. Since reviewing him on another site I have since been contacted by another aggrieved customer in a similar situation who is now also considering taking legal action after not being paid for goods left with him. I would advise Ian Townley's customers to be extremely careful in their dealings with him, to take photographs of goods left in his position and to assiduously keep hold of receipts and records. Ian is is a credit to the antique culture .An excellent ambassador for ukin providing genuine and trustworthy jewlery to his customers. Genourous and patient with serving the customers. Very disappointing quality of jewellery. Travelled across London to look here but aside from a small number of standout pieces selection was no better quality than in a regular high street jeweller selling vintage jewellery.
