To Annie, who said she didn’t understand where the negative reviews came from. I think you’re being glib on purpose because you disagree with their negative reviews. Now, it is okay to disagree. However, they’ve explained their grievances very clearly. Don’t pretend like they are giving negative reviews for no reason. It really isn’t nice to be turned away by a library just because you are not affiliated with the school, so I can see where they are coming from. The resources aren’t really that great though. It’s a pretty nice place, but there IS room for improvement. They should also not turn anyone away, but I guess since this library is affiliated with a private university they can afford to be selective with their patrons. Overall, this place is relatively nice. However, if they are going to be selective with their patrons, I don’t want to support that. There are nice libraries out there that is open to everyone, which all libraries should be.

I was denied entry as I am "not affiliated with the university". I am a full-time engineering student at another college in SF and as my college library is closed on the weekends, Gleeson used to be my go-to in previous semesters. Dedicated to my studies, I have been to MANY college libraries all over the country (and the world in fact, as I studied abroad in Paris this past summer and was permitted to utilize the Sorbonne library). I have never been denied access to any library because I wasn't a student at that specific school. No matter what public service this school provides, to deny another college student access to a safe and quite place to study is unforgivable.

Great place to work or study. Clean modern facilities and plenty of seating.

I have traveled around the world and I honestly can say that Harold Washington Library is the one of the best I have ever seen. They have friendly staff and have soooo many resources. Keep in mind you MUST be a Chicago resident to use computers at HW. GREAT PLACE - also wonderful place to have a short meeting if you were in the loop and wanted to meet somewhere.

It appears like a nice facility from the outside, but despite claims to the contrary on their website they will deny entry to anyone not current student/faculty/staff. These were the words of the circulation desk staff when I visited this afternoon.

Don’t know where the complaints come from. You make the choice to come to a private college so you take it. The library like the gym provides enough stuff and resources for students and staff..
